Cleaned shift solenoid filter screen fixed problem
I have a 99 tl 143k original transmission , at about 110k it started jerking into second and eventually would shift into nuetral when going from first to second .
(but only when cold).After a few tries at this it would stay in second and the rest of the drive was fine.
I had changed the fluid every 15k since I got the car at 60k and the dealer was no help since I was out of warrenty.
So I found that if I let the car warm up for 15 minutes before driving it would shift fine. Well I found the shift solenoids at the top of the transmission on the bell housing (to the right of the starter and below the throttle body).
removed the 3 - 10 mm bolts and found that the 2 screens under there were clogged. Cleaned them and it has shifted fine for 3k so far .
I know this may be a temporary fix but so far so good. I am just posting this to help out any others who might have similar symtoms. So let me know if it helps.

Sorry I did not know how to post pics
I just cleaned it with a toothpick and the faucet then used carb cleaner .
I took out the battery and the rubber intake to get to it.
The 3rd bolt was difficult to get to but I used a collection of extensions and a magnet to get it in and out.
PS. no fluid leaked out (well very little anyway )because it is so high on the transmission

i checked mine this past weekend....all clean. maybe its because i just changed the fluid?
i would recommend removing the battery and anything else in the way because i figured i could get it without removing anything else....that was stupid of me and all i ended up with was a bad case of a stress headache and some busted knuckles.

Has anyone else tried this? Just curious. Its something Im thinking of doing later tonight but wanted to see if anyone else had any success with doing this.
Also does anyone else know of any issues regarding clogging with the Linear Solenoid as well?

BTW, this is an awesome post! Just tried it and it seems to work so far. That 3rd bolt is a killer-you need a long 10mm wrench or maybe small hands to turn since it's hard to get a socket on it.
I had the same problem-my transmission wasn't catching 2nd or 3rd gear until warm-revving like it was shot but then it would seem to get better after a while of driving. Had a P0730 code for improper gear selection. One thing, after taking off the solenoid, i wasn't able to get the screen completely off-the outside rubber ring was easy enough to pull off but the screens and circular inside rubber rings looked like they might tear. got the assembly w/2 wires disconnected from the other connector and cleaned out the clogged screens with some paper towel-one screen was completely blocked. Now I'm back in business!

The funny thing is this screen filter #9 on 99TL, is also #9 part on 00+ TL. It is the same #9, but two different parts now, however they are both filters. I guess it looks like, 00+ should look at #9 filter as well for the same symptom.
I have read many threads related to tranny, and some have done from either cleaning filter or replacing it, replacing solenoids, and oil pressure switch. and in fact have somewhat resolved the problem if it was not too late. I guess these problems have contributed to the fluid thirsty for the 3rd gear to fail.

i did the the same thing you did because i found this post. but get this. i took out that side screw when i was cleaning it out. put everything back together except that screw started it up and fluid leaked out. so if anyone take the solenoid out to clean it, don't forget the little screw.

hello, i have a 1999 acura 3.2 tl and the transmission is slipping, a mechanic told me that the linear solenoid needs to be replaced.
should i change the transmission fluid first or clean the linear solenoid?

Most mom and pop garages will sell you a solenoid because they got they're diagnosis from alldata. Replacing the solenoid probably wont fix your vehicle. Ive replaced tons of a/t's at my shop that have brand new solenoids on them and were still slipping.

It won't get any better. But if you start the car a few minutes before taking off in the morning then it should engages fine, because the seals expand and get softer when the fluid warms up, and they will do the job much better than when they're cold and harder.

doesn't hurt if you try it. The line pressure will be much higher when you put in reverse, the 4th clutch pack sealing rings are worn and hard, so it can't apply quick enough. (4th gear clutches also come on in reverse)so it will take longer time to engage, then computer try to compensate the process by increase line pressure even more, the result will be harsh engagement.

For those who have tried this on their 99 TL, did it help long term? How many miles have you driven since then without slippage? My 99 started slipping this week going from second to third when cold and is shifting into second and fourth harder than it used to. It shifts better when warmed up though. I need to replace motor mounts and do a timing belt service on the car, so wondering if it's worth doing that if the transmission will go soon.

I changed the fluid at the dealer about 2-3k ago so maybe thats why. Perhaps i should have left the old fluid in there!

sounds like clutch disc are worn and trans on the way out
Its pretty common when high mileage fluid gets changed, and a few months later-
pttt goes the trans
If you plan to keep it, go speak in person with the SERVICE MANAGER
explain its acting up since the fluid service--they know why and might get help from corp on replacement for you
even 99s might get help under supreme Goodwill~ its happened before
never hurts to ask
I wish the service writers were instructed to turn away those jobs--but the shop wants every penny they can get in the door,,and if that happens to lead to a bigger repair~ well bonus checks all around for xmas boys!!

What do you mean you park in reverse?
park in Park!!
thats not actually a gear- its a J hook shaped metal arm that grabs onto a gear tooth and holds the trans stopped
waiting 2 minutes in morning warms atf enough to ease that R thunk and hookup
No need for 5 minutes- that screws with the ECU program to get the engine warm by driving
Make sure car is totally stopped before going to D5, it may take a few seconds to engage--thats normal
more than 2 sec and its a trans problem (a danger really,, if you have tried to pull off a quick 3 point turn)

I know about the slightly harsher shifts when eng. is cold. I have let mine idle longer after cold start several times (just this morning, 12 degrees). Nothing unusual noted. What exactly do you mean?

The G! Acura Legend auto transmissions have the same issues with the solenoids getting clogged. Try connecting the electrical connector to the battery and grounding the soleniod body to activate the solenoid. Spray brake cleaner in the solenoid while activating the connection. Also, smack the solenoid onto a folded up towel on a hard surface to dislodge the filings. I've done this many times on my G1 Legend auto trans and the results are incredible.
Also search acura-legend.com for "3x trans flush" - this procedure might help our TL transmissions as well.
