Car started without key in ignition, or me in the car...

So after getting off shift last night I drove home and locked my car, then unlocked my car because I forgot my laptop, then locked my car again. Then something very odd happened, the car started. Headlights came on and the doors locked. I unlocked the car using the key in the drivers door, sat in the car, put the key into the ignition and tried to turn the car off. This didn't work. Then for some odd reason, after having the key in the off position and stepping on the brake pedal, the car shut off. Weirdest thing i've ever experienced in 14 years of working on vehicles. Any ideas? First one who says ghosts or possessed car or Christine gets a nut shot.

Your car has a previously installed remote starter that you were unaware of or forgot about if you're my age.

Yup TLer is exactly right. A remote starter is installed that maybes you weren't made aware of.

Interesting. I'm not aware of one and have owned the car since 09' and have never encountered this happening before. It's the only thing that really makes any sense. Was there a dealer installed option or was it all aftermarket? I'm slightly bemused by this to be honest. I was pretty sure I knew my Marilyn better than this...

It was aftermarket back then, no factory remote start was available. You might be able to determine who made it, and get a couple fobs to make it operational.
