Car Completely Shuts Down

It happened again today. Third time it's happened in the past week. I'll be driving and it's as if someone flips the "master switch." I mean, EVERYTHING stops working. I have to pull off the road, let it sit for a few minutes, then it starts right up.

Have you had both TSBs done for the ignition switch replacement and the shift lock?

the symptom you describe is exactly what happens with the faulty ignition switch.

I had the ignition switch supposedly fixed at the dealership, but I haven't taken it in for the shift lock recall.

Ok, it's done this three more times in the past two days. My old roomie suggested that it's the fuel pump going out. It's been very hot here, and the past three times, I've been very low on gas. I've searched "fuel pump" but I have really found that much info.

If it is the fuel pump, is this a major DIY and what is the cost? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response.

The clock and radio stay on....it's just the car shuts down as well as all the gauges. This is so strange.

Check this:

When the car cuts out, does the radio and air work but not the windows & turn signals?

If so it is without a doubt the ignition switch. Mine did the same thing. Turns out my problem was my alarm was cutting power to the ignition switch.

It basically behaves the same way as if you turned the key to position 1 (the first click after you put the key in).

That's EXACTLY what it does!!! Thanks, NSXNEXT!!

Even though it's been taken in once to have the ignition recall fixed, is this something they'll fix again for free?

No unfortunately they won't. I tried it and they said no. I ended up buying a new ignition switch and installed it myself. Turns out the ignition switch was fine.

It's a very easy fix. Should take you literally 20 minutes to replace it.

Hey if you're interested, I'll sell you the ignition switch I removed for a good price. It's only a few years old and still works great.
