!!! Brake heat sheilds !!!

whats the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of removing yer stock brake heat sheilds ?????

me personally i took mine off cuz i custom painted all my suspension to match my car----and i didnt wanna scratch my knuckle trying to put them back on

i heard sumwhere you can tie heat wrap around yer lower ball joint and tie rod end so it doesnt melt

my question is-----how long wud it actually take for your rotors to melt the rubber boot on yer ball joint and tie rod ends ?????

THANKS FOR THE HELP WITH EVERYTHING

we ran without them on the race car and never worried about melting something else
Might want to run some ducting to them if you are going to track the car

gotta be careful with heat wrap tape, some of it catches fire easily if oil spilled on it--like happens during our oil change

not just melting the rubber but its called a splash shield/backing plate becuase it protects the brake rotor from water....i would personally put them back on becuase the next time you do your brakes you would prob have to just replace the rotors due to the rust or you could end up warping and having to replace them too..

Wear gloves & reinstall them. They protect the rotors.

I think its the steering knuckle he is worried about the paint--not his hand~!

forgot about the splash protection--was thinking of track use, where we didnt often run in the rain- and extensive drilling or removal of backing plate was normal

Its the pads that get soaked... and wont perform when asked
tip for all in rain/puddles--use the brakes medium a few times to get heat in- and moisture out- so they will work at the stoplight

one thing about the splash shields and water, first of all the outside is not protected very well (it is some with the wheel though)

and second some cars, even low performance type of ones, do not even have a splash shield of sorts; ie: toyota matrix (like an 03 or so), only type of shield they actually had was for the lower ball joint, and that clipped on, and i would say it was about 2x3 inches in size or so

so not running shields is NOT life and death

also a third thing, about them keeping the rotors from rusting on the inside; in reality they can actually MAKE the rotors rust more so, and the reasoning as to why i say that is when people live in the north east with the salt on the roads, it gets up onto the inside face, and when the car is wash (and sprayed on the underside) that salt never fully gets cleaned off because the shield is there preventing the clean fresh water from being able to rinse off that salt residue fully
and to help make that point, living in Colorado where they do not use salt for snowy roads and such; we do not get rust bands on the inside face of rotors like the northeast does (and because it does warm up on a more regular basis during winter, cars also get washed more frequently too)

no its not life or death...acura puts them there for a reason though its there so in bad conditions it does protect the whole rotor notice its bigger than the rotor itself usually...i live in new york and getting salt on the rotor is no big deal i can tell you working thru the winter and backing plate absolutley protects the rotors...i have never seen people come in to complain about salt on a rotor becuase it would just come right off...it blocks salt...water...dust whatever but hey if you wanna take your backing plates off go for it thats your opinion...this is just mine

over a couple of years, rotors start getting very bad rust bands on the inside face (which actually ride underneth the pads themselves)
let me try and find a photo of said rust

but yes the shield does keep most of the shit off of the face though

paint all the parts of the rotor that dont touch the pads- with caliper paint or other high temp paint like for the bbq

it may need touchup before azine meets, but sure keeps the surface rust prob under control
inner edge of face, outer part of center section etc
and of course the calipers--all very easy DIY,,paint the suspension arms behind the brakes

yes im totally aware that rust starts to build on the inner portion of the face and the outter the pad does not fully contact the full rotor..i work at acura and see it all day
