Exclamation Airbag replacement

I recently purchased a 2002 tl-s that had been in an accident. The person I bought the car from repaired the body, but not the SRS SYSTEM. I found new airbags (front two blew) and am about to reinstall. I will have to reset the srs light and found that proceedure here. Is there any worry of accidently deploying the new bags by plugging in with the light on? If the sensor is faulty could the bags deploy. What should I check for before proceeding. I also understand that the srs module may have crash data that I will need to have cleared. Can someone help me with understanding what to and not to do? Thanks.

Take it to a body shop- they have experience dealing with airbags
An untrained person could end up wearing the bag!
Yes there is a procedure for battery connected or not with some of the plugs under the seat

Unfortunately, the nearest Acura dealer is 150 miles away, the local Honda dealer doesn't have a body shop, and the body shop I am having the paint work done at said they would bring it to Honda. I'm not afraid to tackle the job if I have the correct procedure. Can someone help?

I would honestly bring it to the honda dealer to atleast test the SRS system and make sure.

If you do attempt to do this yourself MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT the battery first. then do the srs reset procedure after install

I did talk to Honda today and they won't touch it. If it says Acura, they will not work with it. I believe my process will be to disconnect the battery for a while to let the capacitor discharge, then put in the bags, then reset the module. I may have to send the module in to have the crash data removed before the srs light will go off. But I still have not come across a procedure for the overall process. Anyone have info???

I wish I knew. the guy I spoke to in service at Honda Moterwerks in LaCrosse, WI, said they would not service. They didn't have service manuels, etc. It is really a bad deal. I also wanted to have a spare key made. After talking to Acura in Madison, WI (closest dealer), they offered to talk to Honda to give them procedure. I told this to Honda, and they still didn't want to do it. Very frustrating!! It seems like they should work together.

Do you people really believe the dealer works on the airbag themself? no way! They sub it out to a body shop because they do several a week and know wtf they are doing!

Is your car a salvage title by chance?

I have no idea why they would say that. Afterall this car is an accord. There is no reason they would have to talk to a acura dealer to reprogram the key either. I had my deaelr reprogram my TL key to work with the CL Ecu i put in my car durring the 6 speed swap. Took them just a few min.

Yes many do. I dont know what type of shops you have around you but here most of our dealers ALL have their own body shop. And also once the body work is done it goes into the normal service dept to get the rest of the work done. Also what about when a car has SRS issues/Service/Recalls?? You think that they send it to a body shop to have looked at?? The service shop knows what to do. It just sounds like this honda dealer is incompetent.

Yeah, I think the dealer is kind of inept. In response to a previous post, my car does have a salvage title. I was talking to the body shop this morning who is working on the car (happens to be a dodge dealerships body shop), and they indicated that the sensor I was concerned with that causes the bags to trigger is possibly under the seat?? Still looking for answers.

Thanks for the resource. I called airbag systems and they gave me the information I needed. Pictures of locations, tools and resources. I will be sending in my module for reset and then replace the airbags. I'll let you know how it turns out. Should take about 10 days with shipping.

You may also need this to check the system before you install the airbags : http://www.airbagsystems.com/simulator.html
