Airbag Recall 10/2014
Most of you have heard by now the news about Honda recalling cars for airbag replacement. People have been killed by 'exploding' airbags sending dashboard pieces flying.
Honda: 2,803,214 total number of potentially affected vehicles
2001 – 2007 Honda Accord (4 cyl)
2001 – 2002 Honda Accord (6 cyl)
2001 – 2005 Honda Civic
2002 – 2006 Honda CR-V
2003 – 2011 Honda Element
2002 – 2004 Honda Odyssey
2003 -2007 Honda Pilot
2006 Honda Ridgeline
2003 – 2006 Acura MDX
2002 -2003 Acura TL/CL
My 2003 TL Drivers Side airbag was replaced in June, 2011 due to recall. I'm pretty sure this recall involves the Passenger Side airbag.
You can check your recall history be entering VIN at:

Thanks, I'll have to see if my wife's Civic is included. My TL is a '00 so it's not.

so its not HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
right, like it wont continue to expand the VINS covered, same as all recalls~
I predicted this when the recall started and we were not a part of it, time will come for us too
iirc: in 2011 the prob was inflator speed too high, and only a module was replaced- not the airbag itself
NOTE If you live in humid/moist areas this new recall is extra important- for now the maker says those conditions cause the problem...but....

When I talked to the clerk he wasn't sure, But if you go into the ACURA VIN Recall notification? In my Vin Records already show the Drivers Bag TSB as FIXED and have a new Airbag TSB as OPEN.. So I believe this is the passenger side this time, Unless they are going to change my Drivers Bag again?

the first recall was for inflator module, new one is for the shrapnel issue

I really hope the VINs are expanded to cover 1999 - 2001 model year TLs. That way I can hopefully talk the dealer into giving me a sweet TL or TLX loaner car.
Take the car in Friday night, and keep the loaner all weekend.

hey Yikes-- do they even give loaners to 20 year olds in your state?
Note, want to piss the dealer service dept/desk staff off??? try getting a loaner car on Friday for the weekend, on a freebie recall that takes an hour
those cars are for paying customers first, then freebies, acura does not pay dealer for them- its a goodwill offering from dealer when available
MANY people try the Friday -Monday game then keep the loaner half or all of Monday!!
For those needing a loaner for the day, make midweek= tues-wed-thur appointment- more cars are there! ASK in advance for a loaner, call a day before and remind them- but- its not guaranteed
a ride home is all you can expect

No loaner for me when I got my wife's Civic done. One of the few dealers around here that doesn't do loaners. Sat in the dealer for 2 hours waiting on 1 airbag (passenger) replacement.
I'd have even taken the little 6MT Fit on the lot.

I have my appointment this weekend. I asked a LOT of questions. TLs only get drivers side INFLATOR. The airbag should have been replaced for the airbag recall, this is just for INFLATORS. Some cars get more than one, like MDXs and other cars, but TLs only get the driver's side inflator. National backorder, takes about 45 minutes to install, my part took about a week to come in and about 2 weeks to get the appointment. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. People are dying and becoming permanently disabled for a 15 mph crash that normally wouldn't even need a paramedic without airbags, but because the airbags inflate, the inflator explodes and the shrapnel goes through whatever body part is directly in front of the steering wheel, usually the chest or neck of the victim. Where I live in the last 6 months alone 4 people have died in parking lot speed accidents. It is like a time bomb waiting to go off. GET THIS FIXED!!!

2006 NBP TL MT6/ 02TL-S
I got a new (at the time) TSX for an all-day loaner when I took mine in for the first recall on the inflator. Now, my ABP paint looks so bad....I'd be ashamed to even drive it on the lot for fear of scaring their customers...much less take a loaner over the deal...

I called Acura customer care about our 2003. Since its listed (by year) in the recall, but the recall info shows no details about VIN.
They stated ours is not part of the current recall, because of the VIN.
I personally dont buy it....the amount of affected airbags seems to increase daily, like they have no friggen idea of what airbag might be a problem or not.
Seriously concerned since my wife and kids are in our TL more than anything else. Im considering asking Acura/my dealer if they would disable the airbag system completely.
Kudos on Toyota for stepping up and offering that as an option since its going to take so long to get replacement airbags for their cars.

you called the 1 800 382 2238 x5 place? they should know whats happening
BUT
humans,,, you know--
Did you ck your Acura Owners Site | Exclusive Knowledge, Service, & Benefits account (need VIN to register- its FREE) in the recall section, plus site should have a lot of info about the recall
stop by the local dealer service desk- they will have a much better idea of whats happening- real world wise- with the expanding list of VINs
Maybe you are currently just out of vin range?
Anyone who experienced our trans issue is familiar with covered and not covered and secretly covered VIN cars

I might stop by the local dealer (which isnt where we bought the car, but at least its an Acura dealer).
I still think turning off the airbag system should be an option for anyone that wants it done. We never leave the garage without our seatbelts on anyway....while Im sure there are specific cases where airbags would help, after watching a video of an airbag inflator ripping through the interior, Im not sure I would feel that safe with them active.

IF you are that worried about it, disable it yourself. Pull the Fuse or unplug any one of the SRS plugs , like the side airbag connector under the seat (car off) and it will disable the entire system
#26
note: SRS light ON in dash = System disabled!
the Side airbag light On does not count for full disablement
VINs get added as they tear down some older cars or get reports of failures
If you want to protect yourself from airbag deployment:
look up Track Day at your local roadrace track, where private car clubs/groups rent the track for a day and offer 200-300 dollar days-- with a race driver coaching you in your car- on track
Knowing how to go around the scene of a crash or impending crash- as you will know what to watch for in other cars behavior- that's a priceless skill = no airbag use!
Never needing the airbag is a great reason to `need` a holiday gift certificate to `advanced driving school`

"diy" airbag disabling........

we have several ziners that experienced the airbag deployment in real life situations
They were injured the normal amount by the airbag, busted nose, powder burns etc
and the cars were declared total loss- based on airbag deployment!

I've heard that they're currently replacing airbags for VINs that have ever been registered in certain "high-humidity" states. My 2002 TL was once registered in California, so my VIN is affected even though I now live in Massachusetts. Acura never contacted me about the recall; I found out by checking my VIN on their website. Local dealers told me they couldn't get the part anytime soon. I called Acura Client Relations and told them I was upset they hadn't notified me about the recall. Suddenly my local dealer had the part and I got a brand new TLX as a loaner the day I had the recall repair done.

its up to YOU to notify acura customer services of your address
call 1 800 382 2238 x5 gets a human
They need your current address to send a recall notice to!
good job calling customer care and getting it resolved
Don't know why dealer bs'd you = was it a Service WRITER or a manager that told you a long wait for parts?
It can take a while if nationwide shortage and many people coming in at once with the ever expanding list of VINs, possibly waiting on parts from overseas, and the major west coast shipping ports strike/slowdown that has kept tons of merchandise from getting in the country, its finally settled and things are moving again!!
Perhaps dealer got one from another dealer?
When you call customer care- the service MANAGER gets an immediate notice on their cell device from corporate to fix the problem,
corp hates getting calls like yours!!
anything less than all 10s on the customer satisfaction surveys = a fail in corps mind!
that affects bonus money and other bad things for the dealer
everyone should ck in with acura care or direct at the dealer- that recall VIN list will grow and grow....

NO call dealer ONLY!!!
acura care is for when you have a problem with how the dealer handled a situation, not to get an appointment for something
If your VIN is listed you are covered, end of story
note loaner cars are at dealers option, if they have an extra one. Loaners go to paying customers first, then warranty customers
acura corp does not pay for the loaner, its a dealer being nice deal!
ASK for one when you make appointment
try tues wed or Thursday for best chance at getting one

I have always kept Acura informed of my address, but they never notified me of the airbag recall even though my vehicle was affected. I had to look into the matter myself. Corporate may hate getting calls like mine, but I called them because dealers told me they didn't know when they would have the parts, and this airbag issue is a major problem--who knows if it's even really fixed with the replacement airbags. I had actually made an appointment with a dealer and later received a call from them saying they had to cancel the appointment indefinitely. When I called Acura customer service after that, I got results. Just my experience.
