Air Conditioning Not Working

The air conditioning in my TL has stopped working. The controls inside and the fan work fine, but the system no longer cools.

I verified that neither the compressor (clutch not engaging) nor the condenser fan were running when the air was on.

I checked one relay in the under hood relay box and looked for blown fuses in the fuse box located inside the driver's door.

I searched for diagnostic information on this forum, but did not find anything for the 2nd gen cars.

I know some of the TL models will self diagnose climate control issues by pressing 'Auto' and 'Off' at the same time.

Does anyone have suggestions for things to look at?

I would like to rule out any electrical/control issues before taking to repair shop.

On top of this, while checking for OBD codes, I received a couple of P1740 entries (two separate trips). This looks to be related to fourth gear clutch.

Any help is appreciated.

Mine stoped working two years ago. I don't know what wrong.

When I turn it on the air blows, fans kick on but then theres a loud squeek. Sounds like a belt slipping on a pully. One guy that looked at it told me I needed to replace all the AC parts less the fans amd fan motors.

Bullshit!

Now I'm going into the third summer with no freaking AC! Ain't this a bleach!

Have you both check on the freon? Low freon makes grinding soud as well. have the shop check for leaks.

Both of you need to go to a AC specialist and have them check the freon level/psi. Also have them leak test it. If its low the ac compressor wont run. Thats where i would start out.

Im also having issues with my air conditioning.

All of the control work fine, but it doesnt blow air at all.

It cut out a week ago, but came back on after about five minutes, was blowing ice cold air until a couple days ago when it just completely stopped blowing anything.

Any ideas?

OK A WARNING TO EVERY ONE!!!!!

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOU RADIO SERIAL NUMBER AND THE NUMBER TO ACURA CUSTOMER SERVICE!

YOU NEED THIS FOR ANY WORK THAT REQUIRES YOU TO UNHOOK THE BATTERY!

So now that Acura customer service can't help me I have been told to send my radio in to be repaired. $90 bucks to remove the radio and after its diagnosed and repaired its another $90 bucks to put it back. All because I wanted AC.

AC parts list:

Compressor and drier: $430.00
Labor : $200.00
Expansion valve : $35.00
Labor: $50.00

Radio Radio Repair:

Removal : $90.00 plus tax!
Diagnosis : $220.00 plus tax
Repair : $150.00 plus tax
Installation $90.00 plus tax

If you own a 2002 Acura TL and have had or are having this problem PLEASE report it to Acura. I'm hoping for a recall or at least an assist in repair cost.

Thank you.

Its not the serial number you need-- its the security code- we discuss this all the time about where it may have been written down or put on a sticker on certain years.
Using the radio serial number to get it is a last resort. There is even a website that for 29$ and your VIN can get the right code for you.

For the AC- if not used in winter- the seals dry up- the freon and oil all sits in one place. Using the defrost turns the AC on- a built in helper.
Hoses fail- orings fail- things happen. Compressors go out on every type of vehicle with AC~!
I have not checked - are aftermarket compressors available for us?
Check the usual parts store websites.
If the system has been out of service more than a few months, or has been open to the outside air by broken hose or such- a new receiver/dryer is in order- its a must to protect the system from moisture and it will have absorbed too much from the atmosphere.

If just the blower fan suddenly quits- remove the glovebox and cabin air filter tray- see DIY Replacing cabin air filter- then remove blower motor- a few screws- there is a wire bundle plastic connector to the blower plug that likes to melt. and there is a resistor on the backside on the mounting plate that may go too

When the freon has all disappeared from the system it wont turn on the compressor- to protect it-
there is a way to jumper wire it on most cars for testing- again not somethng I had to fix on my tL so- oh no! something I dont know!!! yet~

usually there is a hole in condensor from road debri, you maybe be able to visually see it but usually requires dye added to freon to confirm

you could use honda memory saver before unhooking battery or most of the time you just detatch antenna from back of stereo prior to entering code. I don't think acura will have a recall on this stereo but there is a service bulletin that acknowledges it's a defect in the stereo and tells us to call for authorization on after warranty assistance to have unit replaced. so have your local dealer contact there Acura DSM and ask to be reimbursed your $90 and get you a reman audio unit.

yeah - like most of us have a honda memory saver laying around the garage when we need to work on the car with the battery disconnected lol
I have a lot of funky tools, but thats not in the box~

The best defense is to know and record your radio and nav security codes before needing them. Storing them on your acura.com account has saved more than one ziner on a road trip and had a battery problem. Went online at the dealer while they installed a replacement battery- got his codes- and another 800 miles home with tunes--trip saved!
You can write them down- secretly- in the car too- is there really a market for stolen gen2 radios anyway. With whats available now....take my nav- please!

Great posts in this thread!

My AC problem was a bad compressor. Fixed that and now I need a Expantion Valve. Got one pulled the glove bax out (30 minutes) Poped the hatch off the black box, pulled out two of the dirtiest cabin filters EVER! And there it was the expanition valve. I took one look at it and cursed up a strom biger then Katrina! I got the wrong damn part.

The part I got from the auto parts store.

The part in my car.

What the inside of my car looks like.
