AC- only works when on the highway
AC- only works when on the highway
Hello gang, long time no post. 99 TL. My AC suddenly started acting funky. I can turn on the car and wait twenty minutes, and the AC will still be blowing warm air. It is not until I get onto the highway that it gets cold. Any ideas? Not sure if it is related, but I have also started to notice recently when I turn the car off the fans are still running.
Thanks!
Thanks!
If you haven't add freon to the AC system in recent years then you should have the shop check for a low ac charge first before doing anything else. Also check the AC condenser and radiator for debris/blockage, no air flow, no ac.
2.5 hours of labor plus parts and coolant cost is about right for the rad. However, I miss read your original post. I thought the fans was not coming on when the car is running, since the fans are working with the car on and off then probably no need to replace the rad.

Then check for debris in the condenser.
Question, when you turn on the ac to Max cold with the Recirculating air on- button indicator light is on, what are the radiator fans doing with the car motor running at idle?
1. Off all the time?
2. On/off cycling variable fan speeds?
3. On/off cycling low fan speed?
4. On/off cycling high fan speed (very windy)?

This is what I observed today
- turn car on (ac off)= fans off
- turn ac on = left fan on
- toggle speeds= left fan on
what is old is that it is a very hot humid day here today (91, NJ), and I noticed cold air blowing almost immediately. So I am unsure if what I observed matters bc the problem may not have existed. I was unable to take the car out for a ride tonight to check to see if hot air would start coming out.

Q: AC ON MAX COLD (AUTO MODE) WITH RECIRCULATING AIR ALSO ON, ARE BOTH AC FANS ON HIGH?

I played with the passenger side fan by manually spinning it, and occasionally the fan would spin on its own slowly then die out. I believe the motor is getting power, but it fan motor is toast. Do you agree? I did not get a chance to swap relays, only swapped power harnesses and did not see a difference.

BTW, the climate control has a self diagnosis program feature. I think you should give that a try, it's worth a shot... Do search. If there is a fault it will store the code.
If you mean swapping harnesses as in swapping the fan power plugs, then that would be the same as swapping relays. In this scenario then that is the correct diagnose, a defective fan, because in the original plug position the fan was working at full speed.
