My car would do this every once and a while. It wouldn't idle, you would have to throw it into drive or reverse while cranking and move it so it can start running. It would do this once every 2 months then it came once a week now its daily. In the mornings and nights its fine but if I drive during the day I have to do this. Like just now I started it fine but when I went on lunch break I had to throw it into reverse and get the car moving really quick.

Basically the car won't idle sometimes. I change the ignition switch a few years ago and I was wondering if this was the IAC valve. I would search but it seems the search function on this site is broken. Is there a DIY for taking off and cleaning the IAC? My cousin's a mechanic but he is gone for the holiday up to NY so I was going to see if I could do it on my own.

 

This sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad. I would start there but have a mechanic look at it before doing anything but my money's on the NSS.
