99 Hot Starts

OK, here we go:

Two weeks ago I would crank the car and release the key and it would immediately die. Retry, engine would start, key release, engine dies. Third time was the charm. I figured it was the ignition recall. Mine was also stalling while driving. Just got it back from Acura and both ignition recalls are complete. Since the recall work the car has not stalled while driving, but I still experience the "hot start" issue. Usually on the third try the engine will remain started. In the mornings it will start fine and it will start fine after 30 minutes or so. The problem is only manifested after trying to restart "hot".

Thoughts???????

There are many threads on stalling and ignition problems. See what you can find using the search feature.

But here are some quick thoughts.

Is the immobilizer "key" symbol on the dash flashing when it's not starting?

If so, maybe there's something wrong with your immobilizer key. Do you have a second key that you can try?

Also, Honda and Acura immobilizer keys from two different cars can interfere with each other. Do you have a second immobilizer key on your keyring? If so, remove that and see what happens. That was actually the cause of an ignition/stalling problem in my 1999 Acura TL. I had an immobilzer key from a Honda on my keyring.

And it's also possible that your replacement ignition switch has failed.

Yeah, I am still searching the forums. This is an awesome site!!

When this happens the green key does flash at me. The only other car key is my 99 Tahoe key. So far this only happens to me and my wife says it hasn't done it with her. This is a real stupid question, but is there a chip or something in my key that could cause this? Now that I think about it, the sympton does sound like a theft deterent system.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Back-up... my wife just told me that it did it to her yesterday, but she thought she didn't hold the key in the start position long enough.... What could this be?

Yes, absolutely.

Do you have a spare key that you haven't been using? If so, you might want to try that and see what happens. And make sure they are no other immobilizer keys on your keyring.

Another possibility is that your Idle Air Control Vavle (IACV) needs to be cleaned. Search for "IACV" for more information on this.

Good Luck!
