Exclamation 90K Mile Service

I bought a 02 TL, and the dealer said that the 90K service wasn't done. He said that it would cost @ $500, due to a new water pump/timing belt. Does anyone know if this seems reasonable? Also, can these parts be replaced by myself (avg. car tech. knowledge)? Any and all help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Now to answer your question. If you are fairly mechanically inclined this can be done at home. Its really not that hard, just time consuming due to the location. If not check your local honda dealers as they often have cheaper hourly rates or independent mechanics that you trust.

90 k service

500 for timing belt and water pump is correct here in new jersey anyway at an independent (our dealers charge 800). edmunds.com has some info on maintenance frequency and cost; fyi at 120,000 miles for my 2003 tl the lower ball joints should be checked

fsttyms1, I seem to remember, back when batman was your avatar, you were saying you were at 180K+ on the original timing belt. Did you do yours yet? Any tricks to pulling the crank? I plan to do mine, but don't have air tools, and I'm not sure if there's a way to hold the crank still while breaking the bolt loose. Everything else I'll be fine with. On the Jags I work on there's a lock-bolt that goes in to the flywheel and locks it so you can break the crank bolt loose, any tricks like that on our cars?

check the thread- completed 105 service, it has pics and details
Also see thread Thermoblock spacer and EGR cleaning

fsttyms pulled his motor at 200k in perfect condition and slipped a 6speed in his 2000 TL
Some people get incredible miles out of a part while others get the severe service lifespan

I think I found it, the post by Southern?

I made a list of:
Timing belt
Tensioner
Pulley
idler
3 timing cover gaskets
water pump

Any suggestions? Adds or deletes?

I'm hearing what sounds to me like a pulley/bearing squeal, but I'm not sure where from. To be honest, it's one of the reasons I'm considering doing this job since if it's the water pump I can fix that and take care of the 'maintenance' at the same time, without taking the chance of getting the call from the wife that she's on the side of the road with an over heated car and I'm stuck with a 'right-now' repair. If it's one of the other pulleys, those are quicker and easier to take care of if they suddenly fail (Makes sense in my head anyway, even if it doesn't in print )

Car is at 138K, 3 trannies, but other than that no issues except the a/c blower I fixed last night. Still on factory hoses and belts, and they all look straight, smooth, no cracks or swelling
