if your bulbs are fine then its most likely your ballast that went bad..

either your ballast or ignitor, take off your bumper and switch the pieces around and see exactly what is not working

i just got done changing my ballast in on the passenger side headlight. took about an hour with realignment of the headlight and beam. mine was kinda screwy. the ballast is the silver box on the bottom side of your headlight. three big philips screws, then unplug the igniter from the bottom. igniter sits inside the actual headlight assembly. as for the socket size, couldn't help you to much. mine are all over the place, probably 11mm though.

easiest thing to do would be to switch all the components one by one from the working headlight, to try and isolate the problem with the lights. thats the way i figured out my ballast was shot. not sure why your ballast was leaking fluid. probably shouldn't be that way, as for you mechanic saying it was a sensor...i honestly didn't know there were any in our headlights. good luck
