Unhappy 2002 TL rough idle when stopped

My 2002 TL-S recently has developed issues during idle. The car will run normal for sometime then when coming to a stop, the RPMs will fluctuate bouncing between 750 and 500. The idle gets very rough and car vibrates.

I feel like the engine could almost choke out if the AC were on. The car always runs normally when driving even at low speeds. This happens only during idle and when the car is coming to a stop and persists even when the car is in neutral.

This will typically happen for a few stoplights then the rough idle will disappear and the car will hold a normal smooth idle at 750 rpm. I put in some techron recently thinking it was the fuel injectors, but nothing has changed besides better top end response. I have noticed that the maintenance schedule says to check idle speed around this time. I wonder if it has something to do with this. The car has 114k miles and has been well kept and driven easy. Everything is stock except for an Injen cold air intake with an AEM bypass valve.

Much thanks for the help!

done the spark plugs yet? used ngk iridium or ngk platinum?
and the 105 service?

sounds like you loosened up some crud on the IACV that didnt get moved thru

try a can of seafoam in half a tank of gas- see if that will work it thru

Otherwise you have to work on the bottem side of the TB- remove a small cover and plastic plate- clean everything-
Some are able to do it on car- others prefer to remove TB from manifold and flip it over
needs new gasket for TB connection if you do that $4
Might be in the DIY threads
should fix you up!

when you installed the air intake did you clean the round air plate in the TB throat--that loads up with crud from the PCV system and affects many things

in your case I feel its iacv but asking if another potential prob has been addressed recently

ck your connections on the cai to TB for tight and sealed, ck all vac lines..

Is that the place where it's easy to install a gasket backward?

Yea I had the 105k service done. I put in NGK Iridiums at 100k The CAI has been on the car for sometime. I'm not sure how clean the throttle body is. The connections and vac lines all look good.

I'll try cleaning the IACV and TB throat as soon as I can and I'll put half of can of seafoam into the tank. Do you guys think that the seafoam in the gas tank would clean out whatever the techron left behind?

I'm still on the fence about seafoaming the rest of the engine...and paranoid that a stuck piece of crud is going to destroy the engine.

Where ever you got that idea get rid of it. It wont happen.

throw 1 can in just under HALF tank of gas- thats cleaning strength and will kick out crud
Seafoam LIQUIFIES carbon and crud buildup so no chunks are flying anywhere or looking to get stuck
As long as you do even close to following the diy~~--you will get instant results and no plug fouling-thats only a prob with 100k on them and no afterdrive

get a piece of tube and an empty sports drink plastic bottle to hold the seafoam- important to SEE what you are doing and apply amount carefully- slowly-

ck www.seafoamsales.com for a few methods, plus our diy has TL specific pics and directions based on experience

I like the 2000 rpm for 1 minute in the middle of it while applying max it will take of seafoam--makes BIG smoke cloud!

oil- wait till ready to change oil

when you do the gas tank its the same as manifold vac as far as action- so if you trust it in the gas its the same everywhere
vac port gets instant results- gas takes a tank or two

clean the TB air plate on both sides and edges
ck the connections with a screwdriver to each clamp and a pull on each vac line

Looking ok and being good are different things

So I was planning on getting to all this stuff tonight, but the tranny seems to have died on me on the way home. Oddly enough, it gave up right before an AAmco shop, where I rolled it in to its resting place.

At 114k and 8 yrs old, its out of warranty and I seriously doubt Acura will do any goodwill replacements out here in Boston especially since the car was purchased used in New York.

I suspect I will be deciding whether or not to purchase a rebuild tom...

Do any of you have any suggestions or experience with this costly and painful process?

yeah dont do it at aamco
are you clean title- not salvage or rebuilt- correct?

you may not be aware of the court case where we got= 7 years+ 9 months or 109kmiles- some cars with odometer error vins get 114.5kmiles indicated
thats from date of sale new, not manufacture month as some have mistakenly posted-the day it hit the road to a customer new starts the clock on all warranties

doesnt matter where you bought it
if it will make it to the dealer, speak with the service manager about getting Goodwill Assistance from acura corp,,they may not go 500 dollars but they can match aamcos prices 2500-2800 with 3/36 warranty
retail is over 4 grand on the trans at acura

see the main trans failure thread for details on goodwill-how to get it -how to blow it- skip to the last 3-4 pages for current info

you made an investment in the big service- the car is worth keeping another 80-100k?

the symptoms you had would fit a clogged tourque convertor,, from our standard failure of 2nd-3rd gear clutch discs/packs/stacks

it may drive again in the morning, until enough crud gets onto the screens
and plugs fluid flow= no shifting

sucks...starting to have same problem as the O.P.'s first post. i've cleaned the egr ports around feb of this year *shrug*
(have done other maint too last year)

i haven't seafoamed since last year either, so i may give that a try. hope it doesn't turn into anything more

edit: just read in another thread that bad motor mounts can cause this? mine have been shot for A VERY LONG TIME. guess i should get on that asap
