1999 tl p0740
I have a '99 with 145K or so, original transmission. Check engine and TCS light came on simultaneously last night.
The computer only spit out a single code - P0740. I cleared the codes, but both lights came back on about 10 miles down the road.
I don't feel any slipping during normal driving. When I step on it, there may be a delay in upshift sometimes - it does sometimes get close to redline without full throttle. And I do feel an occasional 'thud' after I've let off the gas at non-highway speeds. (maybe 25-45 mph range around town)
For those of you that have had this code...

- Is it possible this is just a bad solenoid?
- If not, how hesitant should I be in driving the car?

According to the manual the code means "Problem in Lock up Control System". The fix goes through a bunch of tests which nets out to
1) Change the lock-up valve solenoid assembly and the AT clutch pressure control solenoid valve.
If the problem persists (which means the code returns).
2) Then change the transmission and the torque converter. (at least they have a sense of humor LOL !)

pzhoward started her zinership with that linked thread--
in the end, after a few shops diagnosis,,,it was indeed trans rebuild time--almost 150kmiles!! thats great trans life
Now the car runs like new,,, or better! rebuild includes new parts from technology of the last 10 years

That code always signifies time for a new trans.

Thanks all for the info.
I'm not the original owner of the car...I have owned it since it had 31K miles. I wonder if any non-original owners have had any luck getting Acura to split the cost? I did get the lawsuit notification in the mail, but of course I didn't have any problems until well past the 109K mile limit.

I just recently had my tranny overhauled at 150K miles. I did contact the local Acura dealership about the "goodwill" program since I too am outside of the recall specs. They declined to pick up any of the costs b/c I had too many miles. Oh well, it was worth a shot! Maybe you will have better luck!

ck if the recall to install an external oil jet kit was done on the trans--acura can tell you
if you dont know how to open the hood and look
next:
look at the main bolts on your trans- see any blue painted heads? thats a warranty replacement unit!!
if heat damage is found at time of the `recall oil jet kit install`- the trans is replaced instead- warranty!!
the court case warranty extension was 7 years plus 9 months or 109kmiles whichever first
while its true that very loyal customers can get goodwill assistance after limits- thats getting harder to approve,,, with down economy everywhere
a 99 with 140+ I would not expect any help unless you own 7 new acuras all from that dealer and serviced there constantly--you are a profit center for them~
if your trans went well past 100, then it was a winner!!!
the majority of failures go at 50-80kmiles! with the original warranty set at 50--that was a major bummer--

the special extended trans warranty is for the car- not the owner,,
doesnt matter where or who you bought it from- warranty follows the car
assuming not salvage title
recalls too-
ck with acura, there is a new recall on airbag inflator 1 800 382 2238 x5 need cars vin

Car is still in same shape. I did have it driven by a tech who thought it still shifted pretty well.
If I wanted to try changing the solenoid(s), I'm wondering which part numbers I'm looking at. On the diagrams available at numerous part sites, I see parts #6 and #7, which are both sets of solenoids. Both include the shift solenoid. #6 also includes 2 other assemblies, where #7 includes a linear solenoid.
Any idea which part(s) may help?

Always Working In
Brian - the shift and linear solenoids on the 99 have filters that can be cleaned. There are also two solenoids on the front of the trans behind the radiator on the lower side of the tranny ( I dont remember their name...i think they go by b and c something)
Some have reported good results from cleaning and also changing the pressure switches, fluid. Theres alot to read up on this information. I suggest start with a search on cleaning solenoids for cheapest fix.
