Did you have the air bypass installed when you CAI was installed (at the same time) or did you install it aftwerwards? I'm wondering if you felt any difference with the valve on or off?

I don't really think the bypass valve is necessary. I used to have an AEM CAI with out the bypass valve on it and ended up sucking water into my engine ...my own fault though. I was following a friend in truck through some pretty deep water. Just about up to the doors. I was able to get all the water out with no damage to the engine. So I installed the bypass valve like a week later. The reason I say I don't think it's necessary is because unless you want to be an ass like me and drive through that much water , there is no way that you will suck water in through your intake. Of course it may get wet but you will have condesation in your engine anyway. The bypass valve is only going to be useful if you plan on submerging the intake underwater. As for hp loss...I don't think there is enough gain from a CAI to feel a loss by installing a bypass valve. If you are doing it for peace of mind...I understand. That was the same reason I did it. Since then, I got rid of my AEM and installed an Injen. I like it 10x better. Just because of the fitment and the mounting of it. It doesn't give any more hp or anything. I like it better just for asthetic reasons.

What about when it rains hard? I have a 05 TL(i dont know if you had a 2nd gen or 3rd gen) and they have lil vents (the two black grills at the bottom of the bumper)in the front corners where the filter is. I have the aem cai on my 00 civic si but there is really no vents in the corners of this car's bumper (the vent is more towards the middle). Florida gets pretty rainy during the summer....but no flooding around where I live.

Yeah, even with heavy rain you'll be okay. It used to pour where I lived in Texas...very much like Florida rains. I didn't have my TL when I lived in FL but I am confident you'll be okay without a bypass. Even with a vent in the front, you won't suck water in through the intake. And if you did get any in there, it would be such a small amount that having a bypass valve wouldn't make a difference. Here is what AEM says about their bypass valve...notice it talks about a submerged filter.

AEMs patented Air Bypass Valve virtually eliminates the chance of hydro-lock in the event you submerge the filter of your AEM Cold Air induction system in water. On most systems, the valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe and shuts down induction at the filter when it becomes submerged, rerouting air through its external diaphragm to keep water out and air flowing in. Patent #6,394,128.
