After doing a little more research and some maths, you do indeed get better gas mileage from a SLIGHTLY taller tire. However, the mileage increase is only realized on the highway when traveling at a constant speed. Any other time, the engine would have to rotate a heavier, larger tire which reduces gas mileage and increases strain on components.
So conclusion is that if you do 100% highway driving with straight,flat empty roads, no wind, and clear blue skies, sure a larger diameter tire will help you get better gas mileage. BUT if you do any sort of city driving at all (or realistic driving conditions for that matter), you are just hurting the gas mileage with a larger diameter tire.

I still think there's some downside to that. Maybe the MPG stayed the same but now the angular momentum has changed. The taller tire has shifted weight away from the center of the hub which slows down the rotation of the tire.

^nice example. not to mention im sure the aerodynamics of riding so high would have some effect on gas mileage. im not hatin in anyway cause hey, everyone has their own style do what you want but me personally i def. think the "slammed/lowered" style looks oh so much better with our cars. if i wanted something to ride around the country with it surely wouldnt be a tl. but thats just my opinion.
