What? is this?

I am looking at getting a short ram intake for my TL so I decided to take a peak at the factory intake and noticed what looked like a goiter, if ya will, on the pipe connecting the intake to the air filter. There is a hole with a tube that comes out of it with a dead end in the middle of the pipe. it is really random and looks like it serves no purpose but to steal air. can anybody tell me the purpose of this thing?

haha. goiter. it's 1 of 2 intake resonators. you can take a lid to the kraft marshmellow jet puffed and pull off the resonator and put the lid in its place, then put some RTV to seal up any air leaks. that'll give it a little more growl, but it will cause your car to hum at idle. some don't mind it. i didn't.

wow thats exactly what my friend said when we looked at it, just get a jar lid to put in its place. thats what i figured I would do to see if i can get better air flow to the engine. thanks man

yeah no prob, the other resonator is behind the bumper cover on the drivers side. it's a big black container and you can remove it with just two bolts i think? it'll give it almost as much growl as an SRI.

performance gains?? eh maybe? because technically since without the resonator you will be drawing colder air versus, the air you'll be pulling from the engine bay behind the grille.

if you want an intake i could probably sell you the one i have on now when i install the turbo, i won't need it anymore.

i went to Lowes Hardware today to get a PVC plug for it and when I brought it back it was right at the diameter of not fitting. So I found a lid to a peanut butter jar that was empty and the measurement was perfect. I slipped that sucker right in the hole and clamped it super tight. Didn't really notice any sound difference but could be i have nothing really to compare it. I just hope the lid can withstand the heat.

trim it like i did and spray some WD40 on the rubber and force it it. I wouldnt use that lid you used. It could get brittle and break getting sucked into the engine or fall out allowing all sorts of dirt into the motor.

If you have the lower resonator removed that little one makes a difference in noise. If you still have the lower resonator on you wont hear much

yeah i took a 50 mile drive today to see how it would hold up and started gettin the idea it may not be the best of quality for its purpose. looks like ill be gettin to use my dads dremel soon haha

do i really need to disconnect the front bumper to uninstall the lower resonator?

yea if you have a TL-P, a type-s res is smaller and drops out though the slash guard opening.

the front bumper comes off very easy, 4 bolts and a few clips and a tug and it falls off. takes less than 5 min. check the diy section.

OP just because i like you (you don't act like most n00bz) i dug through my mancave and found some old parts

lower resonator, really easy to take off once you have the bumper cover removed.

this is what i did to the resonator you had in question (notice the lid to the Kraft Jet Puffed jar. i'm such a fatass)

and a bonus peek at my mancave, when the swap is done i'll just keep my tools in there and put my guitars and maybe my cousins drum set in there. in due time

so i took the lower resonator off today which wasnt so bad except where the guys who took off the bumper before me to put in the new transmission broke half the pins which were a pain in the ass to take out. other than that it was simple but the hum i was getting may not annoy some but it really annoyed me. SO i put the smaller resonator back on until i can get my CAI or SRI after i get my job back and some cash in my account.
