Tuning/chaning gear ratios

This might seem like a stupid question but is there anyway for the average everyday person to change the gear ratios on the transmission to make it faster or even more fuel efficient? Or is it something that has to be done by the dealer or the pros? The all-mighty Google has given me no answers. Thanks.

This is on the 2003 Type-S transmission btw. I would imagine others would like to know as well.

Changing gear ratios is one of the most expensive thing racers do to their transmissions.. It involves making right out CNC new gears for the trans and tailoring to the race track. That isn't happening for our trans tough.

Your best bet is to get another transmission be the; CL-S 6 Speed Manual swap or the AV6 Transmission which have different ratios vs our OEM.

Yeah most of the time the quickest way to customize gearing is through the final drive gear in the differential, which on most rear wheel drive cars isn't especially hard since the diff is separate from the transmission. However the TL is Front Drive, so its all packed into the trans-axle assembly. On top of that, most automatic transmissions are planetary gear systems which in order to adjust the gearing you would basically have to make a new transmission.
