Reseting ECU............

Alright so I reset my ECU by pulling out my CLOCK/BACKUP fuse on the passenger side fuse panel because I installed headers. So I forgot to put it back in and I noticed now with that fuse out my CHECK ENGINE light never comes on now. Before it always was on because in the past I gutted out my cat, took off my resonator and pre-muffler so my O2 sensors would throw a code. Is it good to keep that fuse out? I mean it keeps my CHK ENG light off, so now what?

DONT drive with out that fuse. Put it back in. Get your car fixed so that it doesnt keep throwing that code. Or at least buy a simulator.

What will happen if you drive with that fuse out? I did for a little bit, it drives fine. Besides I put an OBD2 scanner on my car and the only code it was throwing was the exhaust emission code, due to my gutted cat.

Well for 1 you want the fuse there to protect the system. 2 you dont want the ecu constantly reset and having to learn. Just get a emulator if you dont want to see that light or make your car legal by fixing the cat!

Ok, but I live in Florida where there are no emissions, and by gutting out my cat it has made my car faster along with all the other mods. So i think i will keep my kitty gutted.

It is illegal to have. You can buy a emulator (for the 3rd time) to make the car run right (even though you think it is its not). You can buy high flow cats that will give you the same gains (and probably more by giving you some needed back pressure)

Im always in amazement as to how much you know about this kind of stuff... and still people argue their point, but in the end, you're right.

In theory. Time, and Reading the service manual, doing a 6 speed conversion, plus changing/removing just about every piece in the car helps too

Not perpetuating myths like

1. You have to reset the ECU when you install headers.
2. Removing the cat improves performance

would be another good start.

Ok, ok, lets get something straight here, reseting a battery has always been a myth to me but I learned it from this website so I decided to try it. BUT.......... I love it when people talk about stuff that they arent 100% sure about. I have the slowest 2nd gen tl they make, 4-speed automatic tl-p. Bone stock they are slow, high 15's if not low 16's in the quarter. My first mod was an intake, didnt notice much, raced my friends 03 infiniti m45........got smoked. Then I removed my resonator and pre-muffler......a slight difference.......still got smoked by the m45. Then I lowered my car, got 45 series tires on my stock 16" rims and gutted out my cat. Thats when I noticed the biggest mod difference(when I gutted out the cat). From a roll I would get SLOWLY walked by the m45, from a stop I would get beat a little worse. Then I put XS headers recently on my car.....................Right hand to god from a dead stop, 1st gear roll, 2nd gear roll it doesnt matter our cars are identical, not an inch different. It pissed him off so much that he thought that there was something wrong with his car because he could not believe the performance from my car, he was just used to smoking me all the time. He actually took his car to Infiniti to see if there was something wrong with his car. Infiniti said that EVERYTHING was running perfect on his car. I even raced a stock 2000 tl-p which has a 5-speed automatic tranny, up to 70 mph I had about 5-6 cars on him. So my point is out of all the mods I did the headers and the cat made the biggest difference.

Changing your tires to 45s is what made the difference. It changed your gearing, and rotational mass which changed your performance.. There is no way the mods you did would put 5-6 car lengths by 70 on the 5 speed TL-P unless the guy you were racing had something wrong or just plain didnt know how to drive.

Oh and also you arent resetting your battery, you are resetting the ECU. and it is and isnt a myth. the newer cars especially have something to be gained from it on occasion (especially if its been driven really slow for the ecu to adopt those type of parameters) You wont really gain any thing from it HP wise. All your doing is giving it a quick way to readjust to the new mods (change AF, shift points, timing etc..) And the TL(02-03) has a Learn procedure your supposed to do after you disconnect the battery.

Well I didnt know we had grammer checks on this site, reseting the battery obviously doesnt make any sense but I know everyone has enough common sense to know what I meant. And it always seems like the people who I always race someone always has to say that maybe there was something wrong with their car or they didnt know how to drive...........I guess AUTOMATIC is more complicated to drive than a manual.

There was no grammar police. I was just correcting something that might have confused others that might read it.
Well when you say you beat him by 5 to 5 car lengths by 70 that raises a big flag because you would need an awe full lot of a hp increase to do that and i can tell you that you didnt get that much from the mods you did.

i dont know a hell of a lot on cars, but fsttymes1 has a point, you'd need an aweful lot of a hp gain, and those mods wont give you much of a gain...

I understand, but how am I smoking newer TL-P's and most of all how am I side to side with my friends Infiniti M45 when he used to just walk all over me? Check out the specs on an 03 M45, its not like we only raced once, we must have raced a dozen times and we were identical ALL the time. Here's another thing, ride in a 99 TL-P and try to even chirp the tires from a dead stop, I promise you will have to be on a smooth road to even chirp them, believe me I remember my car when it was bone stock. Now from a dead stop it peels the tires all the way through 1st gear and chirps 2nd all the time.

Sure you gained HP. I never said you didnt. Adding a header adds quite a bit(doing all teh mods will give you pretty much the same HP as a type-s). but doing what you did wouldnt put 5-6 on a TL-P. I owned one! (and mine spun the tires in first and often chirped into 2nd without the header.) You would need much more than the type-s power to even come close to doing so. (my buddies SC'ed maxima putting down 270+whp couldnt even do that to me by 70)
