motor mounts

hello acura forum

I've only had my 2000 acura tl for a short time so im still learning about the car.. long story short, she has 74k miles and ive owned her for about 6 months..added tint, changed all fluids, plugs (ngk) (trans and oil 2x) brake, power steering fluid, front brake/rotors..wiper blades, hood struts, power steering pressure switch (which was leaking), alignment, bad rear view mirror from auto dim fluid making dark area on glass, 01 cup holders (much better)... (both junk yard items, lol) had intake removed for cleaning as well after misfires.... long story short, over $1000 invested so far.. how important is motor mount replacement? they say that the front and passenger mounts go first.. my mechanic did a power brake and the entire engine lifted up like 6 inches or so.. he said i should start by changing the front and passenger mount because those usually go first.. he use to work at at an acura dealership as well.. himself and another tech at same shop on different days both told me about my motor mounts and commented on how they need to be changed and how do i deal with the annoyance of it clunking around, etc... question is, whats your experience with motor mounts and how long can i get away with it? not a cheap repair.. can it do more damage to the car? like the axles for example...

This isn't exactly a "fix" per say, but I heard you could at least temporarily clean up your old motor mounts a bit and fill the insides with 3M Windo Weld or PL Roofing Sealant. Look it up, it's pretty ghetto, but might give you some time to save up for the motor mount replacements.

thanks for your response, but i'm going to just ride it out till i have the extra cash.. i can live with it for now.. it's not that bad. i was just more worried about if it can negatively effect other parts of the car like front axles, hoses, etc from the engine moving more than it should during acceleration.. and yes, i get on it hard sometimes

Motor mounts are something that are going to go bad on almost every car, and unfortunately Acuras are one of those cars. A weak motor mount won't harm other parts of the engine such as hoses unless something were to come in direct contact with them, but it could have a negative effect on axles and the transmission.

When you accelerate and the engine twists back, normally the engine mounts would prevent it from moving past a unsafe distance, but since the mounts are weak when it starts to twist it puts unnecessary pressure on things like your transmission, transmission mounts, axles, and other parts in direct contact since these things (that normally wouldn't have to) now have to work to help hold the engine in place. This results in loss of power and potential damage to other parts of the vehicle, especially when driven hard.

We do have XLR8 engine mounts which are a good upgrade for any car. They're made from steel that's been coated with a black finish, stronger polyurethane bushings that come in your choice of three firmness, and they're built to last with performance in mind. You can find them on our site here: XLR8-MM-9903TL - XLR8 Engine Mounts - Excelerate Performance - European, Exotic and Japanese Performance Specialists!!

If you wanted to purchase any of the mounts individually feel free to PM me for pricing or email me at: performance@excelerateperformance.com
