I did use the amount of gallons I filled up with. The gas pump cut off at like 14.178 gallons. So, just round it up to 14.2. Tank was on E also. When I drove away, the gas needle was way above F.

I can get over 400 on a full tank doing mosty highway driving, 300 if mostly city.

All that with my over-aggressive driving habits as well. 00' with 180,XXX miles, never had any work like a valve adjustment done or had the heads off. I've got HELLACIOUS carbon buildup on my pistons as well according to my compression test (155-205psi). My only mod is basically XS headers and removed intake resonator w/ K&N filter that i never clean.

Try seafoaming your engine (search) and doing a forced fuel-trim relearn. It WILL help.
what do you mean seafoaming?

when the gas needle is on 1/2 tank, that doesn't necessarily mean half of 17.4 (actual capacity of the tank) or the 14.178 you filled up with...it's just a rough approximation. you really have to measure the amount you fill up with from that halfway point to know how much gas you burned.

i use a site called mymilemarker.com to track my mpg, just enter the odo reading and how much you put in at every fill up and it takes care of the rest.

since i got the car ive averaged 18.1

ok just a suggestion, when your tank is half full, fill up, and see how many gallons that is, and then next time you're at half, see how many miles you drove.

TL's tank capacity is 17.1 gallons, when the light comes on, I think there is still 2-3 gallons left in the tank.

I get around 320 miles, from fill up to as close to "E" as I can, usually takes a little over 14 gallons. Averaging around 23 mpg with mostly city driving.

Have a stock 2000 TLP, 130k, that I bought with 125k on it. Only things I've done are new tires (Michelin Primacy MXV nitrogen filled), seafoam, NGK Iridiums, and use Chevron 93.

No offense but that really isn't very accurate. There are a lot of what ifs in that method.

What I do is reset the trip odometer at every fill up. Then at the next, take that reading and divide it by the number of gallons it took to fill up. This gives you a more accurate reading of gas mileage and takes more of the variables out of the scenario, especially if you fill up at the same place and, for the most part, at the same pump like I do.

I've been getting about 24 mpg with 85% highway at 75mph most of the way and then some stop n go traffic. After a week, I hit about 220 miles at "half tank" then usually fill up..don't like it getting lower than 1/4.

For those of you getting 250 per tank...

SEAFOAM!!!!!!!!!

P.S. TL-S is bone stock for now except for 17" chrome rims that were on it when I bought it a few months ago and NGK Iridium plugs installed shortly after buying.

Driving Conditions:
The fuel needle didn't drop to half until I was on my way back home on the highway. On the way to the dealership there is 45% Highway, 30% Hills, 25% City.

---On the highway I drove 70-75 with the cruise control on. I also passed 3 Semi's, gas pedal all the way down all three times. Highest Recorded Speed was 93 while passing.

---During the hills, I maintained a constant 65mph until briefly slowing down to 45-55 for 3 small towns. I also drove without the cruise control during the hills.

---City driving killed my mileage a bit. I didn't really know where I was going, so manuevers required more gas than necessary to get across lanes to exits, went down a wrong road 2 times, quick entry onto interstates, etc.

Mileage wasn't that bad considering it is Winter, but I didn't have the A/C on either. I was surprised it came out above 27mpg. If I made a mistake anywhere, feel free to chime in, as I am very tired.
I didn't say that was the actual amount of gallons in the tank at the half mark.

Last tank, I traveled 350 miles. It has improved lately, since I usually barely get into the 300's. The weather where I am has been warm lately. I guess that is causing the increase in miles.

I tend to have a heavy foot though. I run late for everything.

I get very often about 330-350 on mostly city driving with 10-20% highway. I just did the seafoam, so I'm curious if that will change anything as far as my range goes.

Im curious, I would like to know how many miles New York drivers get considering the rush hours and potholes, cuz to be honest i cant say with a str8 face that i get 250 or more on my 2000 with 143xxx! and thats mixed highway and city, i calculated it once and i was getting about 13-14 MPG,

something is wrong here, you sure you not measuring with KM instead of miles. Thats about 185 miles more than i get on 15 gallons.

Sfont, that's about 32 mpg - completely normal for pure highway driving.

If you mainly do city driving you're 185miles / 15 gal = 20mpg is not out of the norm. Now if that's 20mpg highway, then you might have something to worry about.

Personally, I find that my fuel efficiency goes up 50% +/- when I go from pure city driving to pure highway driving.

I don't step on it all that often - my commutes don't require me to do so. I don't use the ac all that often either, so that coupled with the fact that my city driving is actually almost always suburban in the 50-55mph range, and on average I get at least 310 miles - & when I really am featherlite on the throttle then 330-350.
I've learned a trick or two from here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling

My longest tank was about 523 miles, and I had a bit under 30 miles to go since the pump stopped at 16.25 gallons and the tank holds 17.17. This morning was 495 on 16.001 gallons. Almost 100% highway, of course, with 65-70mph cruise. The trick is catching the freeways at just the right time in the morning and evening.

My best tank MPG was pushing 34, but I'm normally in the 30-32 range. I have a K&N air filter, which improved the mileage noticeably.

i've gotten 420 miles.. and thats on 14.3 gallons.. idk where people are filling up with 17 gallons.. but this thing was all but sputtering into the pumps that day and it held a MAXIMUM of 14.3 gallons..

i know what the manual says.. but i've never been able to squeeze in even 15 gallons...

and my car had trouble starting that day it was so low.. so idk whats the deal with the car supposedly having that big of a tank...

Capacity is 17 gallons, and you'll have to be completely empty.

Same here. I've never gotten more than 14 gallons. Theres still about 2+ gallons when the light turns on I think.

Just got back from a trip from Richmond to New Jersey. Averaged 29 MPG's doing about 75MPH and hit almost 400 miles on the tank. Had almost a quarter tank when I filled up. Don't have any idea what it does in the city though, since I haven't had the car long enough.

This was last week:

It took 16.825 gallons for those 503.5 miles, thus 29.9 MPG. Just filled up again today at only 425, and again got 29.9 MPG. I'm driving back and forth to Woburn, about 95 miles per day of 95% highway at about 65-70mph. I've got a K&N filter in it, and I've gotten as much as 32-33MPG in the last few months.
