DUH!!! That's why I said it has something that doesn't let the power go to the transmission when the car is on drive. I'll take a picture when I get a hand of one. Or when someone wants to do it here NYC and we run a DIY

ok. wow I just never thought someone would actually put hids on reverse. props to your work man. couldn't really tell it's because you made a video during the daytime but I'm sure it's easy to tell if it was night time.

i really don't leave it on for more than 1 or 2 minutes not really trying to test if the housing will melt.

i could turn them on while the car it's off ok i guess i'm gonna have to do the DIY myself so i could see more of TL'S with them ok

Certainly creative but besides tailgaters, I think a really good use for those would be to figure out a way to install those in the inner sections of the red brake/running light lens area and make them rear fogs.

Since there are four bulbs that all do the same thing in the red rear lens areas, you can remove the inner bulbs and install the HID bulbs in one those inner areas or perhaps both.

For the US, Canada, Germany and other countries where the driver is on the left side of the car, the bulb would go on the left side of the car. I have seen many European cars and the Oldsmobile Aurora here in the US that have both sides lit up, but traditionally it is on one side of the car depending on right/left hand drive countries.

Here is a quick google link for some info on rear fogs:

At a very high level, these would be the steps:

1. Remove the 7443 light bulbs from the inner lens. There are two brakelight/running light bulbs on each tail lamp assembly.
2. Keep existing ballast location he has and Install HID bulbs (if possible) in inner areas of the taillamp assembly/sockets. I would imagine it would fit since the 7440 backup bulb and 7443 have the same socket.
3. The HID bulbs will have their own power source of course activated by his current on/off switch for his HID system back there.
4. You keep the outer 7443 bulbs as they are and you will still have brake lights and running lights, just two less bulbs.
5. In bad weather, you can flip the switch to activate the HID system and the light will be bright red, creating the rear fog light like some of th european cars have.

I can't be the only person who knows about rear fogs..

Again, this is real high level thought..but I think would be a great mod if you don't have to have bright reverse lights

OK, for the rear fogs, here is a pic..not sure if this makes it clear. HID bulbs run at 35 watts normally, so not sure how hot it would get. I know there are some halogen type rear fog bulbs that run at 50W, so HIDs would be cooler and no where near as hot.

Keep in mind, the outer bulbs will still operate normally using 7443 bulbs and the wire/socket for the inner 7443 bulbs on the housing would not have a bulb in it. The HID bulb would be in the highlighted section below and only come on with the separate switch you have wired up to turn them on and off.

do rear fogs have to be red? if not 3000k or 2500k hid's in the reverse lights would be pretty sick imo. maybe it'll look too much like solid hazards :/

HID runs hotter at the core, but halogen radiate more heat if that makes sense.

but all-in-all HIDs will run hotter PERIOD. example would be 01-02 CL roadlamp housings will melt with HIDs, but not with regular halogen bulbs.

the amount of watts isn't a measurement of heat, it measures the rate of energy conversion. BUT more energy usually means more heat, but that isn't always the case. for example if HIDs run 35w then why are they brighter than a 50w halogen bulb?

im not sure all my information is factual.

well, any outward facing rear light that is not amber or red is illegal in all 50 states. I think reverse lights for backing up only and lighted license plate are the only white light you can have.

You may be able to pull of amber, but if it was me, I would do standard 4300-5000K for a rear fog light setup (if possible) to keep it as bright as possible through the red lens and keep the yellow 3000Ks up front for my HID fogs that I have.

oh and lets get some nighttime lights; maybe park the car with the rear facing a wall about 10-15ft away? take a picture of the wall and from the side

Well, while I lived in Colorado, my 9006 OEM halogen fogs would melt the snow and ice that built up on them keeping them clear while driving. But, when I put my 3000K HID kit in my fogs, they could never get hot to melt the snow and ice on the lenses, same with my headlights...so that is my proof that HIDs run cooler in that real basic example. Those CL road lamps are not large bulbs so they will have less wattage than an HID bulb. Coated HID bulbs like the 2500 and 3000Ks to make yellow light will run slightly hotter than a non coated 4300K bulb, i know that first hand with the HID bulbs I have used for my fogs.

The way a xenon gas bulb lights up (electrical current sent through a xenon gas tube) create more lumens than a filament based bulb like halogen, at least in vehicle applications. HID bulbs have no filament in the glass.

u're right. it didn't melt the snow because HIDs are hotter in the center while halogen is hotter throughout. the lower wattage helps the HIDs run at lower temperatures, but better output.

^^^ I see what you are saying now. Not sure how HID would stand up in the tail light housing but I think it would be a cool mod. Well, maybe Cisko can tell us how hot the housing gets on the outside, that would be a good indicator.

A few of the cars on the highway tonight here in the ATL in very dense fog had their rear fogs on..couple BMW's and an Audi...shit is bright as hell and you sure would have to be an @sshole if you rear ended them. They saw me coming up from behind them with my 3000K HID fogs...i had the back end of their cars looking like bright niagra falls piss lol

Ha ha...why would he take video, create a thread for a DIY, go through all that for "fake HID bulbs"???

...attempt to fool everybody...?

Just throwing it out there.

Cisko TLS, Props man!

I love it...!

Nice mod...out of my budget for reverse light mods so I'll have to wait for now.
