Talking CAI risks

i was looking to put aem intake in my 2000 tl-p.... but i was wondering the risks of having the cai.. i herd if u get water or sumthin into the cai it will suck it up and screw up ur engine.. now i probably am wrong and was wondering what negative setbacks there arre of having a cai... i kno the positives....

Basically the only risk of the CAI is hydro-locking, when you suck up water through the intake. Some say that it's hard to do because of the amount of water needed to actually fill the tube, travel up to the engine and enter the engine.

I, for one, don't want to find out how hard/easy it is to do. Avoid high puddles and you shouldn't have a problem. A friend of mine also mentioned that they sell a bypass valve that minimizes the risk of all that happening.

Put my intake on about a month ago and I love it. The car feels like it has a little more zip to it and sounds kick-ass. A definite recommend.

I've had my intake on since last year. I've been in every condition possible with a lot of of rain. I have yet to hydrolock my engine. Just don't step on the gas that much when it's raining hard.

ok... well i want the added pep and the gas milage as some people say increases by maye a couple of miles.. i really need it cause my school is 12-13 miles each way soo..... it gets really expensive and hit my wallet hard... soooo if youll could tell me a good price for a good kit that would be great, also that bypass valve, i am alwyz cautious about little things like that.. duno why

my dad hates me doing stuff to my car.. but when hes out of town or anything im usually messing around with it.. ive had an intake in for about 8-9 months now that he doesnt know about, but thats because i have a Comptech Icebox and it looks stock and he wouldnt really figure out by looking at it that its a CAI. the AEM one on the other hand will stand out (just incase you didnt know). And the water issue, ive heard that the Icebox is better because the actual filter isnt at the bottom of the car but in a box at the top, and the cold air comes from a tube thats at the bottom. therefor, the water would have to go through the tube, then through the filter, then through the rest of the piping to get to the engine. Oh and for sound issues, the icebox is a lot quieter than the AEM as from what ive heard.

Im not trying to change your mind or anything, both intakes are about the same in power (AEM V2 & Icebox) but from the problems you listed i thought id give you a heads up about the icebox if you didnt know about it already..

Get a CAI. Threre are no negatives. Water is not going to get sucked up into your engine unless you submerge the entire filter in water and that is unlikely to happen unless you sink your car in a lake or a massive flood occurs flooding your car up to the windows. Your gona get GREAT SOUND and Slight PERFORMANCE GAIN. No Negatives. Just Do It. You can drive through the rain full speed with a CAI in, nuthing bad will happen. You can hit puddles too cuz a puddle is not a lake or flood. I personally know because i have a CAI and i drive through rain all the time and hit puddles etc. Water is not gona get sucked up unless the filter is completely submerged in water ok. Be smart.

i got it for about $260 if i remember correctly. installed it myself with a few friends.. took a while but thats but we were messing around alot and some of the old stuff was a little hard to get off, but id say with a friend it shouldnt take but 2-3 hours? and i can feel the power gain, specially when i hit VTec.

Gas mileage - im not too sure about, i dont think it makes any difference but i dont think the others do either, and if they do its only about 1 mile difference.

oh and i have an 03 TL-P so a thing or 2 could be different like installation, gas mileage, or power.. but i highly doubt it since i dont have a type-S and our cars are basically the same thing besides the front end..

its really not that hard to install, trust me.. that was our first mod too.. (one friend has a 00TL with only suspension, rims, and system which were all installed for him, and the other an 05 M3..) you really only need your friends to help with the bumper because you will have to take it off and put it on which is a hell of a lot easier with someone else's help lol

and i usually dont drive the car too hard, unless i start racing or im just in that mood.. and when you hit about 5k rpm, the intake makes a noticable sound thats just awsome, so i floor it sometimes just to hear it lol

yeahh... its a great mod.. good bang for the buck and easier to install than headers and stuff.. and if you want to see how it looks, just click on my account and i have a few pics of it... the only thing different from it and the stock filter box thats noticeable is that it says Comptech sports on it... but its not like the big metal tube showing on the AEM and Injen ones..

If your main reason is for mileage stop now. Nothing will really help you on short trips like yours other than your own foot. If wrenching out every last bit of HP is what your looking for then go with the icebox/aem

I love my Injen CAI. I was scared at first with the hydro-lock issue, but everything is fine. I noticed the filter still gets wet in the rain, so I disconnected the tube by the TB to see if ANY water made it's way up there. It was bone dry. I don't hit the gas hard when it's raining anyway so there isn't enough pressure to suck the water up under normal driving.

The sound and performance gain is great under dry/normal conditions.

i have an Ice box my gass milage didnt get affected, the only thing that changes is your driving you want to rev it up there to hear the intake so you tend to give it more gass then needed. headers know that will mess up your gass milage.
