05 MT Mount Question

Hello, this is my first time posting here, I've been lurking for about a year now.

I bought an 05 TL 6 speed transmission to swap into my 03 TL-S, and I am somewhat confused as to what mounts I need for the transmission. Based on my search results, I've found that I need the CL mounts, but they don't look like they would fit on the 3g TL 6 speed. Am I missing something? I can provide pictures of what I have if need be. Thanks in advance.

Karanx7 12-29-2018 12:40 AM

You just need to change the rear mount and the rear mount bracket. The front and side stay the same. Also, you will need the manual transmission mounts.

Do you know what you're doing for the rest of the swap? It's not just plug and play.

flameleon 12-29-2018 08:38 AM

Thanks Karanx, yes I'm quite aware that this isn't a plug and play swap. I have not started the swap yet because I'm amassing parts and double checking everything before I take my car apart. Speaking of plug and I play, I see that you used the AEM EMS V2 in your swap, which is my plan as well. Is that truly plug and play, or was there anything you had to swap or replace? I've heard/seen many people say that it is actually PNP, but I'd just like to verify that with someone with whom I'm certain has actually used the AEM EMS V2. Sorry for the hassle and thanks in advance.

flameleon 12-29-2018 11:42 AM

I just bought the "beam" (#8, used from a CLs6) which includes parts #5 and #6. I understand that I need to retain the front mount from the AT and change the rear mount. Am I supposed to keep the AT rear mount as well? If so, I don't see how it could bolt up to the CL's transmission beam.

flameleon 12-29-2018 11:45 AM

Sorry, but I don't seem to have an edit button...

Anyway, I meant to add that the mounts seem super flimsy anyway and I might mod/make my own since my college has a CNC mill, lathe, laser cutter, and so on available for us students to use somewhat freely.

Also, I don't know what you mean by "side mount", are you referring to the beam, Karanx? Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your time.

Karanx7 12-30-2018 05:39 PM

4 is the front mount, 12 is the front mount bracket. 10 is the side mount, 11 is the side mount bracket. These all stay the same

9 is the rear mount, 13 is the rear mount bracket. 5 and 6 are the transmission mounts, and 8 is there mount bracket. You say that you already bought 8 which included 5 and 6. So you need to get 9 and 13.

The AEM EMS V2 makes it 95% plug and play. You will need to replace is the OEM O2 sensor with an AEM Wideband O2 sensor. There are some other minor wiring splices you will need to make as well.

flameleon 12-31-2018 10:40 PM

Thanks Karanx, you fully answered my question.

Another Manual Swap

Hey guys, I have begun amassing parts for my manual swap. So far, I have bought everything besides headers, the ECU, and the shifter.

What I Need

Shifter
: I plan on buying the K-Tuned one sold by HeelToeAuto.
ECU: I'll be using the AEM EMS V2, I will need to buy their UEGO Wideband sensor in order to use it. From what I understand, it is about 95% plug and play. According to Karanx7, I need to splice a few wires. However, I do not know what exactly I need to splice.
Headers: I'm just going to buy some Mazo headers, though forced induction is almost certainly in the future. It wouldn't be a proper "build log" if I didn't say that. Though I can certainly afford it and am quite ambitious...

What I Have Bought

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...6a68a3d8c1.png

What I have in My Possession

Pedals
Center Console

I bought almost everything at once, so most of it will be arriving at about the same time. I believe that my clutch pedal may be missing some parts, though I am not certain as to what those parts are. I plan on posting pictures of what I have tomorrow. I will also install the new brake pedal tomorrow to get it out of the way.

Also, I plan on recording as much of the swap as possible. I just bought a new camera and will buy a shotgun mic next month along with the ECU and the shifter if I'm feeling good. I plan on doing the swap during this spring break.

Karanx7 01-04-2019 05:26 AM

Wonder if the K-Tuned shifter fits our cars directly.

flameleon 01-04-2019 12:06 PM

I hope so! If not, I'd imagine it'd be a close enough fit that drilling a hole or two would suffice.

Karanx7 01-04-2019 02:28 PM

If it's a direct fit, that would be a good upgrade for our cars. Drilling an extra hole would be :ugh: for me.

Once you get started on the swap, I can help you out when you have any questions. You should also really really get the 03 CL-S6 service manual, the 03 CL-S6 electrical troubleshooting manual, and the 03 TL-S electrical troubleshooting manual. Reading the electrical manual diagrams will make it very easy to understand how achieve OEM functionality the way Acura meant, as opposed to trying to band-aid any wiring problems.

flameleon 01-04-2019 04:39 PM

Dang, those are expensive... But I agree that I should get those, so I will. Thanks.

horseshoez 01-04-2019 04:41 PM

So, just playing Devil's Advocate here; wouldn't it be faster and a heck of a lot less expensive to simply buy a 2004-2006 TL 6MT?

flameleon 01-04-2019 04:48 PM

Yeah probably, but that's not very fun... Also I like the styling of the 2g and I enjoy this kind of thing.

Forgot to mention that I think that this swap would cost about as much as buying a 3g, considering that there aren't a ton of manual ones here in southern Louisiana, though I have not looked in a while. I've only seen maybe 10 TLs here since I got mine in 2017.

Hey, I get it if you prefer the styling of the 2G. As for the availability of 3G 6MTs, yeah, not a huge supply, but not unobtanium either. Back in 2017 when I was shopping for mine I ended up shopping in the entire lower 48; after five months I ended up finding a cherry and unmolested car only 150 miles away. :)

flameleon 01-04-2019 05:23 PM

Wow, good find! All of the TLs around here are pretty beaten. I don't mean to brag, but mine is definitely the cleanest one around town, though I'm also probably the only one who cares about their TL 'round these parts.

horseshoez 01-04-2019 05:50 PM

The following threads might give you a feel for what is (or recently was) available out there:

flameleon 01-07-2019 09:17 AM

Dang, Marcus said that the 3g shifter won't fit a 2g TL.

Also I just got back to my dorm and things have been arriving for the swap, I'll have to go pick that stuff up soon. I also opened up the transmission and took pictures, I'll upload those along with pictures of what I have received in the mail thus far sometime later today.

I should mention that I was somewhat able to put the transmission shell back on, one of the gear forks gave me hell though... Long story short, I can't put it into reverse anymore. I opened it up to make sure nothing was rusted or damaged (the trrans was in a flooded vehicle from hurricane Harvey). I would have searched the forum for a tutorial but I was in the sticks visiting my family. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Karanx7 01-07-2019 07:22 PM

Why would you open the trans...?

The small bearing is the pilot bearing for the flywheel.

Because the trans was submerged in seawater for the duration of hurricane Harvey and I wanted to make sure nothing was rusted since seawater is somewhat corrosive and could possibly eat through a seal. Luckily nothing was, but there is always a possibility. I can always take it to a shop and have them properly reassemble it though. I might take it somewhere to have it more thoroughly looked at to be safe. I did not remove any gears, I just opened it.

There were some parts on the outside that were very corroded, as well as a few of the bolts that held the halves together.

I was thinking the same thing until his last post above.:)

The only 'tips' I know of here on the forum, regarding tranny reassembly, is the quote below from NVA-AV6:

LOL, be very careful of the counter shaft bearing, if you do not spread the retaining ring and try to bolt the case together you will be replaceing the other half of the case when you send the other bearing thru the 1/16-1/8" thick casting. Make sure you have the tools to set your diff lash or you will be screwed. be sure to mark what spring bolt came out of what hole, they are 3 different legnths (these are the 12mm head bolts that have the springs and balls that lock the shift arm positions, there are 6 of them. Getting the large shift arm to line up during re-assembly is fun, NOT. And I can not stress enough to check the shiming of the main shaft and diff, if you don't have the tools don't do it.

As Karanx7 advised in an earlier post, it is highly recommended that you acquire a CL service manual; especially now, since you have opened the tranny. It has all the detail you need to get it back together. You can get a quick and dirty download PDF copy for $22 from the site below. Or, if you search real hard here on the forum, you may find one for free.:)
Acura CL 3.2 2001, 2002, 2003 Service Manual | AutoManualSource

In addition, depending on how many miles that CL-S6 tranny has on it, you may want to replace the two differential bearings ($40ea) and axle oil seals ($12ea) while you have the case apart.:dunno:

Pretty much, you may want to take a real hard look at your diff bearings while it is apart, almost evey one of these I have taken apart has had really rough diff bearings that are only like $22 ea.

Thanks, I'm looking for a CL manual right now but I have not found a reliable link yet. I got the 2g TL one though.

Karanx7 01-08-2019 04:56 PM

Here's my video that has links for both service manuals. I try to keep it updated if the links every go down.

flameleon 01-09-2019 08:04 PM

The CL link is unusable, I just get a popup the looks somewhat like a part of the site. I don't know about the TL one as I already downloaded it from a different site a few days ago.

Karanx7 01-11-2019 01:42 AM

Not sure then, it works for me. I know plenty of people have used it to get the CL manual too.

Weird, it works now... Anyway, I got the file. Thanks. Also I asked around in some FB groups and many people think that I can use the k-tuned shifter, all I need to do is make a bracket to move the shifter to the left by about an inch. Nobody had said that they had used the k-tuned shifter itself, but many had used the 3g TL shifter. I guess we'll find out.
