^^^ Using Torque for all the engine parameters, Pandora/Slacker for radio, Google Maps for Navigation...
Automation tool am using is Tasker....
I have it set to manual, where I hit a button and Wifi/Bluetooth/Screen brightness MAX/Screen timeout = NEVER....then I start the apps that I want....
When I hit the same button again, all off the items turn off and the tablet locks....
You can see the tasker button saying "Start Driving" in the 2nd pic....when I click on it, it toggles to "Stop driving" and back to start when I click it again....that controls all the stuff I mentioned....

I have my power tapped into a 12V accessory. When I start the car, I have Tasker (app) turn on tablet, wifi, bluetooth, gps and then auto start Sygic (map app). I like Sygic because I can use the maps offline for nav. Navigon is another offline map app with good reviews.
When I turn off the car, Tasker, turns off bluetooth, wifi, gps, closes Sygic, and sets the screen to time out in 7 seconds. This way the tablet's battery is hardly touched at all while the car sits.
I ran a separate car adapter under the driver side dash so I still have access to the tablet's USB cord for any upgrades or laptop required operations.

^^^ the reason I did not do that is if you dont want the tablet to start, or just going for a short drive and just want to enjoy the car, I have the option to do that.....
to totally automate it, I can also configure it to start and do everything when it connects to a specific wifi signal....which comes from my cellphone.....
but yeah, many ways to do it

Man, this is an awesome mod and I really want to integrate a nexus 7 into my dash. The ONLY problem right now is that I am having a incredibly hard time locating a nav-dash for my 03 tl-s non-navi. If you have a link or a site that I can find one of these from I would appreciate it much!! Thanks

^^^ that will fit just fine and the best thing is, its got the charger/headphones in the bottom so that might help....
I suggest cutting a card board to size and taking it to best buy to check the size of the tablet....

Good job.
I know this thread is old, but here's my recent set-up:link- https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-v...ontrol-919557/
I was able to keep control of fan speed and vent control.

Here is my setup, I went with a Galaxy Tab 2, WiFi only version. I also run car home ultra for a home screen, but I also made a splash screen that looks stock when first loading up. Also i'm running tasker to allow automation ( loading up when key is turned on, and shutting screen back off when car is shut off). Also one more is torque, it allows you to setup custom gauges to monitor engine vitals and even check and clear engine codes.

Here is a pic of my dash with an android tablet in nav:
Android Home Screen with Go Launcher EX:
Car Home Ultra app (makes screen look like GPS)
I converted a non-nav dashboard to a nav dashboard and inserted a 7 inch android tablet (original galaxy tab) in the nav screen area. It fits perfectly and the graphics are very nice. I will post before and after pics below with what I did.
It is an awesome GPS solution. There are plenty of GPS enabled tablets and I just downloaded a GPS program that you can use offline without a data connection and you have a great 7 inch screen.
And it is a cool way to get internet in your car if you have a phone with a data plan. You can wirelessly tether your phone to the tablet for an internet connection.

curious
So I am curious about this mod. Do you have any regrets? Still have the vehicle or did u upgrade. I am thinking about doing this any pointers? I am assuming that the 7 inch is the biggest u could get. What if anything would you do differently if you could do it again? I would love Bluetooth and newer nav in my nav 2002 tl. thx

I recently did this mod to my 03 non Nav TL. I already had GROM Bluetooth in mine. I used a Nexus 7 tablet however you can fit in a 8 in tablet. Use a Right angle OTG y cable or a right angle charger. I havent had any regrets. at first I was having charging issues to where I would lose 15-20 percent overnight then charge 3-5 percent on my daily commute(15-30 minutes). That was fixed with USB 3.0 extension and OTG cables(more power throughput). I should have gone with USB 3.0 cables the first time. Thats the only thing I would change. Here is my log from mine. https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...on-log-940486/
Also be careful with the Radio faceplate. I Killed one of the bulbs so now it doesnt light up properly.

Video
Ingredients:
1.7 inch tablet - bought used $150 (any 7 inch should fit perfectly just make sure it has navigation. I think most of them do.)
2.w/ nav dash bezel - bought on ebay about $30 (make sure hazard button included)
3.w/ nav climate - bought control strip about $30
4.head unit with audio in line
U should post a
Steps:post a video of your wiring in the back?
1.Sand the 6 nubs on the inside of the dash bezel flat so the tablet will lie flat
2.Cut out a square piece of felt to line the inside of the bezel so the tablet screen will not be scratched.
3.create brace to hold tablet to bezel. I am not so handy so I outsourced this to my body shop. They created this metal back lined with felt and secured with bolts
You can see the bolts were molded to the plastic with some type of molding putty
4.Once Tablet secured wire the 3.5mm headset on the tablet to the audio in on your headunit (I had a rear audio in on my headunit)
5.Wire the tablet charging cable to a 12v source on your car.
6.Automate tablet using app tasker:
When car on: turn on screen, wifi, gps, disable screen timeout
When car turned off: set screen timeout to 7 seconds (and wifi and gps will turn off)
7.Remap search button on the front of the tablet to act as a power button in case power needs to be turned on directly in the future without having to take off the dash. (I'm not sure exactly how to do this but will post specifics later)
*or you could create a small hole or button in the dash to access the power button.
