2nd Gen Navigation DVD Hack
2nd Gen Navigation DVD Hack
Does anybody know if there's been any attempts to create a homebrew hack of the navigation DVD's? I'm trying to do some research to see if it's even possible. I haven't disassembled the disk yet but I'd imagine a well seasoned programmer could figure something out and maybe even create a SDK for it so other programmers can customize the disk without having to do extensive programming. I mean my beef really is just the interface really needs updating and if there's a way to skin it to maybe make it look similar to Vista or Mac OS or something it would be great. I really dislike the turn screens, it looks 1970's-ish. I have disk version 2.03 or something like that so I'm wondering also if the latest 2.40 did change the interface somewhat. I think if I could further examine the disc along with the harddrive I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to hack a homebrew version of the navigation software. Any tech heads wanna chime in? Thanks AZ.

Well, I've looked at the files on the disc and none of them mean anything to me. Everything is compressed and/or encrypted. I'm sure if it were possible someone out there would've already done it. I was however able to burn a copy and it worked perfectly. I guess for now the hack is a lost cause.

that is for generation of acura/honda navigation systems that are based on the Windows CE platform (3rd Gen Tl's, TSX, RSX, late model MDX, etc), hence why they where able to be "hacked" The ones in our 2nd gen Tls,cls isn't based on that and therefore hasn't been hacked yet, at least by anyone here.
wish i had ssen this thread when it started.....i recently tried to see if i could blindly fix/hack my '99 TL. i bought my car with a bad card, and decided if i could remedy it without retrofitting it with a $600 DVD drive replacement. so i decided i'd try an idea that i couldn't find any record of: just copy the DVD data from version 2.40 and put it onto an 8GB Compact Flash card, then into a PC card adaptor and then right into the old drive in my car. it simply says that the card is unformatted.
i was thinking that if somebody knows if you could(if it's even possible) reconfigure the DVD data to make the car think that it's got a DVD in it, that would be a start to hacking the 2nd gen nav systems.

There are a few threads on here of people attemtping to hack the 2G nav discs with no luck. I've tried it myself with no luck of course, and there have been many other attempts by people way smarter than I am, and to my knowledge, nobody has succeeded. I would love to be able to change this though!
well does anybody know of a way or program that can be used that is similar to what we're tring to do?
i'm sure there's somebody out there that has done this with a regular DVD on a PC.....now granted, i realize that this isnt a regular DVD or computer, but there has to be a way. i've tried looking around on the net to see if there are emulator proggies that can help out, but it seems that the proggy would have to actually be in the onboard computer, and accessible(which i dont know how to do).
but maybe i could start gathering information here....
does anybody know the following:
what type of DVD the 2.40 DVD is? i'm guessing DVD-ROM.
what type of computer interface in the car? could it theoretically support a DVD emulation hack?

You shouldn't have to go through all that to hack the DVD. It should be something that can be done on an actual PC when you insert the DVD, it's just finding the actual software that might be able to do it. I'm gonna do a little more research on this today if I have the time.
Maybe we can all chip in and pay a really good programmer in India to hack it for us. I think it's a lost cause though considering how weak the CPU is on the nav unit. It would be great if we can beef up the CPU and update it to use the newer version navigation systems or something after market but that's stepping into the carputer department. Help us out my Desi brothers I'm sure you've got the connections. I can take the disc to Angkor Wat Cambodia to ask the Hindu Gods there but they all converted to Buddhism
Ok, was there ever an attempt to hack it? Here's what I got out of one of the .cd2 file.

Yes that is correct. Crash Override and Acid Burn; Crash N Burn. Anywho, it would be nice to see something different beside the safety precaution. If it anything related to a PC, it should be hackable.....
