Thumbs up z4 ain't quick enough for the TL-S

y'all know that little roadster that BMW makes...? not the z3, the other little ultimate driving machine, the Z4...

this a.m... at the light, techno cranked to 11, this person (o.k. it was a girl...) floors it when the light turned green. Out of the corner of my eye I see the very tip of her hood pass my TL-S.

...and I thought to myself "so you think you can take her, huh?"

in D3 i floored it, VSA on, crap piece of chit stock rubber starts chirpping like crazy, after 40 mph, it wasn't a race anymore... It was a heck of a morning wake-up activity though, sure got the adrenalin pumpin'. I seriously thought for a second that that car might be faster...

So we come up to this turn and there is stopped traffic. I think, lets see how well my car can stop... How dissapointing. It performed every extreme manuver like a butler. it stopped like nothing was wrong. I could not get the mechanical beast to break a slide nor wag its tail.... ahhh... the z4???? it let go off the gas when it saw that she was loosing ground and the curve was coming up.

So the moral of the story is:

nothing, just that I am bored at work and it is friday and that the TL-S, stock, if you were wondering, will leave another car not in its class (Z4) in its (TLS) rear view mirror.

Hey nice kill! I always wondered how our cars would stand up against BMW's roadsters (not the Z8 of course).

I'd love to line up against this guy's Z3 at work. One of my co-workers always makes fun of me because I have a "Family sedan" so she assumes it must be a slow car. While she always talks about this guy's Z3 that she rode in that "Does 0-60 in like 1 second!"

Me thinks my TL-S with its "Family Sedan" image would probably spank that guy's Z3 (I'm pretty sure his Z3 is the base 2.5L model, not the 3.0L model)

Does the Z4 come in 3.0 and 2.5? I think a 3.0 would be close.

When I read the title i thought to myself, "there's no Zaino Z4???" OOps!

Yeah just like the Z3, the Z4 comes with either a 2.5L and 3.0L engine.

The 3.0 Z3/Z4 should be able to beat us .. They both run low 14s stock. Of course, those times are driver dependant... On the street, anything can happen

Just an additional comment....that Z4 is hella fun to drive. Bmw's dynamic stability control in frigging amazing! It will NOT let you screw up when you try to do all you can to throw out the rear.

but anyway, yeah, a TL-S would kill a 2.5.....a 3.0? not sure...would be a good run though.

I think I saw a 13.9 or so for the 1/4 in the car and driver I have. So I would think the 3.9 Z4 should take a TLS, but like you say, one the street, the driver makes the difference. By the way the Z4 attacked the turb, sounds liek the driver was a wuss. The Z3 suspension was based on the e30 (2 generations ago 3 series) and it would destroy a TLS in a corner. The new suspension is supposed to be much better.

My wife's Z3 2.8 5-speed manual is pretty quick and handles exceptionally well. I've driven loaner Z3 3.0s and they were definitely much torquier off the line. The Z4 3.0 is built on a better chassis with the same torquey engine and a great power-to-weight ratio. I would be surprised (and impressed!) if a TL-S could take one off the line.

The Z4 2.5 is 184HP/175LB-FT... No problem for a TL-S. The 3.0 is 225HP/214LB-FT. Should be close, considering the Z4 is a hair under 3000 Lbs.

But the Z4 (2.5 OR 3.0) Can out handle, out manuver, and out drive a TL-S any day. Between the Double VANOS, dual intake, suspension (M3-based if you opt for the sport suspention), and oh yah not to mention avaliable with SMG, a 3.0 could lay the smack down on a TL-S no prob.

Just look at Clive Owen. Would YOU come that close to a draw bridge in your TL?

I drive a 3.0 6 speed with sport package when it first came out. I was with my buddie at the dealership waiting for his M5 (prick) so we drove one. Jesus, i would want one so bad if i didnt hate small cars.

I bet Z4 is a pretty good car... But even I don't care if it can even outhandle a Ferrari........

It just Drop Dead Fugly with the dead fish eyed headlights with a fugly copied S2000 rear end...

just my two cents, but recent BMW designs are waaaaay over the edge.

I didn't like it in pics...I do like it in person. kinda like the new 7 series. I really like it in person. You are right about the rear end though, it is a rip off of an S2000.

Not that it matters much, the thing is that the curve was approaching and there was stopped traffic in the middle of it... So no, the curve did not slow me down. There was traffic inside the curve (stopped) so I had to stop also. The curve, if it had been completely free and clear would not have been an issue...

Excuse my english, what I wanted to say is that the car does not skid... (very nice ABS) When trying to (admitted, very limited trying here) shake the tail, I could not get it to do so. The stop was unremarkable if anything. Done the way it should have been done, even though I was trying to make it unorthodox...

From all the comments on the thread, I will assume that it was a 2.5 liter. Now that I have experienced a match against a 2.5 Z4, If I ever line up again against one, and it is a girl, I'll let her win.

Looks on the car are a bit radical... BMW is a profit maker, so I am sure they are hitting their target with their designs. I know I lust over an M3 Cabrio or a 330Ci hardtop, something I can't say about the front grill of the spied 2K4 TL-S.
