XM Antenna install

Hi,

I just purchased a SkyFi2 and I was wondering how other TL owners have installed their antenna. I have a 2001 TL.

I was thinking on the roof near the back and then running the wire around the back window and into the trunk. OR in the front, running the wire under the weather stip around the windsheild and then in the passenger door.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help,

Rob

I posted a similar request not too long ago on the audio forum, re: putting it up on the rear deck near the sub and not running it outside. A friend of mine did this in his Altima for Sirius, and claims it works very well. The responses I got seemed to indicate that this is OK so long as you don't have heavy (limo) or metallic tint on the rear window. Just an idea.

Do you have the Roady 2? or the SkiFi 2?

Because the roady has a much smaller antenna, I actually mounted mine up front, in front of the sunroof, tucked the cord under the weatherstripping down to the passenger side door, and then went behind the glove box. Just another way, not sure what your set-up is. Mine is just played through the cassette adapter and is not hard wired. It was quick and easy.

As soon as I can get around to it, I am going to gut the XM antenna from an 04 TL and pop my Skyfi antenna into it and mount it on the back of the roof like the 04s have. Yes I realize I will have to drill a hole through my roof, but after installing 7-series sidemarkers, it will be a piece of cake.

If you are not technically inclined, I would suggest you take your car to Circuit City and have them do it for you.

I'll post my pictures when I have a chance but the guys that do it there do an excellent job, and charge (including tax) $58 to connect the XM to the internal electric source so that when you turn your car on, XM turns on with it, and you don't see any wires anywhere.

It takes them roughly 2 hours to finish the job. I would recommend it highly.

on mine the reciever unit is in the trunk. so the antenna wires run around the glass and into the trunk. then from the trunk i ran the wires from the HU to the reciever in the trunk under the carpet. all you have to do is remove the lower seat cusion (rear seat) then pull of the plastic cover in the door jamb to get the wire up front and under the carpet

this is how I mounted my roady 2 antenna and routed the wire into the car. just be careful to route the antenna lead behind the door hinge and make sure door doesn't pinch it when closed. I move my xm roady2 from one car to another and use in the house too with home kit. use the cassette adapter in two of the cars but have to use the fm modulator in the vette. only works half-ass in vette probably due to poor antenna mount location, got to work on that.
I mount the roady in the little slide out compartment above the radio. works great but the remote makes it much more user friendly.

I have mine installed inside the rear window. Sits right next to the third brake light. Never lose signal unless stuck under a bridge. No ugly antenna with wire coming in from the roof, I love it! Plus, makes it really easy to transfer to another car if I had to. Sound quality sounds the same either way. Tried it both ways and I can't tell any difference. I also have 20% tint on my back window. Not metallic though. I always maintain full bars on my XM signal.

i did mine through the roof between the front wind shield and sun roof. i ran the wire through the sun roof and pull off the trim of the sun roof, yank it across the inner ceilling to the front wind shield down to the xm.

What's the best way to get the antenna wire into the trunk? I can see how the wire fits nicely into the channel of the rear window gasket, but I don't see any obvious way to pass the wire into the trunk.

you can do 1 of 2 ways. you can either pull up the rubber trim (the trunk seal) and run the sire under that and carefully reinstall the rubber, or you could drill a hole and use a rubber gromet

I placed my XM antenna in the corner of the front dash where it meets the windshield, and placed my controller behind the set heat controls. My reception is great, except for in a garage, and sometimes in the tunnel, but I think that is to be expected.

I have also put the antenna on the front dash. It works just fine! Same spot as the post above me. No worries

x-m radio

The whole idea in my case was to conceal the unit. I have the Sony version where I can take it out and use it inside the house. The unit is under on in the armrest area . Ran the wire under the seat along the right door are and put the antenna aon the parcel shelf on the rear. With the high theft rate here in leaveland Ohio this idea maybe good for california, and new York.

Can anyone recommend a good/easy way to run an XM antenna wire from the trunk to the center console/cup holder area? I keep my XM2Go in the cup holder area now, with an antenna wire temporarily going to the back deck (inside the car). I'm gonna move the antenna to the rear roof for better reception, run the wire into the trunk, and then under the carpet or whatever it takes to get the wire up to the center console.
