Worse mileage after tune-up?

How is that I changed my spark plugs, drained and refilled the radiator, oil and filter and niice new battery cables and I seem to have lost 50 miles per tank of gas?? The car feels and sounds as good as it did when it was new, nice steady quiet idle again, temp gauge stays below the half way mark, it pulls awesome, plenty of power but the gas mileage dropped off? Any suggestions? I was hoping to get some better mileage after some nice little work done.

GAS=Winter mixture in northern states. Try changing brands.

How many tanks have you been thru since? Also winter blends are out now which will reduce, also watch that you arent filling up with gas that has 10% ethanol

i would say it has been about 2 or 3 tanks since i changed the plugs and stuff, i only put in 93octane,,,,, I go to Hess for my gas, maybe I should try a new spot? But it still seems like it happened right after all thism and it still runs great, better than i remembered it could (which is nice when you get that feeling again!!) You dont think maybe also an O2 or something? I have no CEL

Are you sure it's not winter gas? It's probably just a coincidence after your work.

I lost 60 mile per tank full too. I had the platinum spark plugs put in, drained differential fluid and changed and oil change. Gas mileage has been down 5 mpg. It did happen at the same time of the winter gas too and someone suggested that but I think it was the spark plugs. but why?

Where the hell am I supposed to be finding this gas? Is there any gas station that sells gas without the ethanol? I don't mind paying up to $5/gallon, but I can't find any gas station that doesn't have the "up to 10% ethanol" sign.

did you notice this thread is from 2006? back when the final date to comply with the E10 was still a few years away?

if you find the odd station without it- they are proably not legal anymore

even worse- obama has signed on for E15%!!! as the new standard
I guess we didnt need corn to eat after all~

My badz. I blame BHorsfall. Damn 1 poster!

I really don't think E15 will pass. Acura/Honda specifically say NOT to use anything higher than E10. Actually, almost all car manufacturers suggest this for older cars.

Older cars are just screwed at this rate.

already been signed into law- E15!! hopefully it will only be for say.. 2006 and newer cars~ and they will still sell E10,,
Im not clear on the details of that yet
(not on presidential advisory council for fuel)

the govt and car makers want cars to last 10 years and be sent to the dismantler for recyling and reuse as beer cans

BH what plugs exactly did you install? it makes a major differance!!
the correct ones are ngk platinum (stock) or Iridium or Iridium IX

no bosch multi prong types or acdelco etc--they wear out in months

During this winter I went from 310-320 down to 270-280....I am hating winter gas!!! I just tuned my car 10K ago with everything you said including tranny fluid, did my valve adjustment and a process that removes gunk too....

I wont know until summer gas comes around if this whole winter gas thing is really true!!! I only started reading about winter gas this year.

Even made sure my tire pressure was right.....still 270-280 in my last two months....hate it..

run some more cleaner thru the gas tank- seafoam works well, so does bg and redline
1 can/bottle to half tank

what pressure for what tire size are you running?

you are on the correct spark plugs?
its not just the winter blend- its the stupid Ethanol doesnt combust as well or as fully = poor mileage

From a quick wiki search, it seems that only 2007+ cars were authorized for E15. Then, in January 2011, they expanded it to 2001+.

Still, this motion authorizes but does not require gas stations to offer E15. So, for now, we shouldn't have to worry about it.

My biggest beef with this is that ethanol blends yield less MPG than old school gas.

and you are surprised the govt, car makers, gas industry have such a cozy relationship?

Sure you can have an electric car!! but you have to charge it at home every 90 miles...

wiki MTBE for why they went to ethanol,, a small problem with the old additive getting in groundwater,,eating thru the crust of the earth or something like that,,it was BAD news

Now they just want to deprive the world of corn for basic food= by using it to make gas

Tire pressure should be checked at least monthly. It drops when weather turns cold, & vice versa. Good way to detect slow leaks early (how did I learn that?- ) Don't forget the spare.

to add to the debate of how to improve mileage: hydrogen generators for the engine
here is one place to ck website for lots of info and comparisons
http://www.hho2u.com

my brother just installed their $200 unit for cars on his 1600cc vtwin bike
First 100 mile trip, mileage jumped from best ever 42mpg to 52!

had typical bike low idle problem- feels like its going to die- cleared itself up!
and emissions at tailpipe greatly reduced (by nose ck..many bikes have a tendancy to be set slightly rich from the factory)

More testing underway but over 20% gain without tweaking to perfection,,this could be worth having on the TL
gas is $4.15 gal today,,headed for 5 in my opinion,
the company website has calculations based on 3 bucks a gal and how many tanks to pay for itself, then its all bonus mileage,,even faster payback with higher gas prices

something for those who live outside the box to ck out
