Post Wiper smearing

I HAVE IT TOO!!! Lots of people were saying the wipers smear black stuff all over your windshield. I used them for the first time today and sure enough, its all over the place. How many wipes until this mess goes away? Is there a TSB on it for the dealer to replace them?

Thats strange I have not had any problems with my 2000TL. I had the car a year in Dec.
I got the wiper blade rubber inserts changed at the dealer.I changed them in Dec. because the car was a year old. What do you have a 2001 model?

Yep, 2001. Looks like its a bad rubber surfacing thats rubbing off. Go figure. I'll mention it to them monday when I take it in to get repained to fix the scratches the idiot buffing guy made.

I used the windshield water spray for the first time today. Very impressed, it fanned out to cover the whole windshield, while my old car just sprayed a direct stream, no spread coverage.

I do get alot of smearing but it is the dirt that I don't wipe off the blades. Wipers need to be maintained if you want to keep them working well. Shut the car off when the wipers reach the verticle position. Then wipe them down with the rag with some windex or soap to get the loose rubber residue and dirt off. Stop wiping after the black stuff stops coming off onto the rag and they will wipe cleaner and more even.

Washer spray works great when someone is tailgating you. It's great when their nice clean windshield gets slightly wet and they have to smear their sheilds. Back off dude!

I had the wiper smearing problem. I read in a thread way way back about a problem with the wiper fluid that the factory used. Apparently it had too high an alcohol content and causes the rubber in the wipers to degrade. This results in the smearing. I asked the shop to flush the system and I haven't had any further problems with it.

I had the same problem ... at first. I did nothing and now it doesn't do it anymore. Must be the cheap rubber they used on the 2001. Other members reported having the dealer replace them but experienced the same problem. Give it some time for the rubber to wear down.

Same here. They flushed the system and replaced blades and a couple of hoses. No problem since.

The wipers I had sux big time. When it rain I don't know whether to wipe it or just drive with the rain. I'm going to get my first oil change this saturady and will tell them to check it. I think it is just the blade. After inspecting I can tell the blade is not soft and smooth. It felt like old rubber and has tiny rough spots all over. I cleaned my window real good one time with some windows cleaner and black and white newspaper. It was great for a few days but it smeared again.

How come they're different for left and right? Are they different size? I haven't really notice that.

thaitea,

Yes the driver side is larger than the passenger. I believe driver is 22 and passenger 19.
