Windshield Hit!

Well, at least I know the TLS has a damn strong windshield.

Driving down RT. 2 in CT this morning, a rock about the size of my thumb came flying off a dump truck about ten car lengths ahead of me and SMACKED my windshield incredibly hard - it sounded like a bullet hit the car.

OUCH!

It left a small divet in the windshield that can probably be nicely filled and polished out by an autoglass shop, but I'm simply amazed the windshield didn't crack or shatter - it was literally that hard of a hit!

I HATE dump trucks.

Sorry to hear about your windshield.

I cracked my right fog light this weekend .... a pick up truck I was following threw up some gravel. Saw it coming but it was too late. There's a dime sized circular crack on the outer glass, the light itself works OK though.

Does anyone know how much one of those fog lights costs? Any recomendations for after market fogs?

I feel your pain dude, the same thing happened to my RX. Unfortunately, I could not get it filled up because of the type of impact and the windshield of the RX has microscopic heating wires in it. It was about $600 to replace the windshield with the original.

Unhappy

Sorry to hear about your "baby" getting hit...

But, if there's a silver lining in all this -- it's that it's better to have it hit your windshield than to hit (and scratch) your hood!

Cool highway rocks and stones

It seems that within the past few years in CT, the Trans Dept, or whomever, has been doing a lousy job of filtering the sand and salt used for highway in winter.

With my CL 3.0, I can't recall getting as "hit" as much within the past 2 years. I'm talking about the big ones like Xorg just experienced. Mine would happen out of the blue with just cars in front of me on I-91 near Hartford. his flying stuf out there is just plain gravel! NOT just sand.

Another reason for me to get the nose mask for highway driving in the winter time AND in the summer time for all those bugs -
who like to stick to my bumper. Nasty stuff.

I used some Griot's Garage Glass Polish and went to work on the hit. It's still visible, but I managed to buff most of it out. Fortunately it didn't go too far into the glass itself, looks like it just skimmed it.

But you are right about CT highways, we have some of the worst in the Northeast!

If you are in Los Angeles, try and stay away from the 60 freeway from downtown going east -- I got more hits on my previous car's winshield than any other place. I felt like I was in a shooting gallery.

Note:

I did get a small sandstone rock tossed into my windshield up in Angeles Crest (after some snow -- months ago). I had a ton of Zaino coats on the car AND windshield. The impact was brutal and left a set of "ballistic" marks about 1/2 - 1 inch long on the winshield with a 1/8 pit in the center. I thought I would have a big pit for sure. I wiped down the "streaks" and pit mark (with a paper towel on the spot) to find a 1mm scratch that is pretty much invisible. This wont stop concrete, but if the stuff needs a little kinetic energy "burned-off", the Zaino does help. Just don't expect meteorites to bounce off the window...

I know how you feel.. I had my car for no less than 30min when a rock flew up and hit my windshield. I wasn’t as lucky though, mine now has a small (1/4) crack in the glass near the hood! Im sure it can be filled with no probs though..
