Windshield cracked

While my wife was driving the car, there was a big noise hitting the windshield. Aaaccckkkkkkkkkkkk. A big crack right in the middle of the windshield. The crack was a size of a push pin and a star shaped. Sh*t. Now what do I do? What's gonna happen to it? Will it eventually grow larger? Oh No. How much would it cost to replace the windshield? Anyone with an idea? Thanks..

Re: Windshield cracked

Fix it! Fix it now! The crack will get bigger and you'll have to trash your whole windshield if you don't fix it right away.

Run, don't walk, to your auto glass store. If you don't know which store is good, call your Acura dealer's service dept. and ask for a recommendation.

Thanks for your advise. But is it really fixable? How much would it cost to fix it and not replacing it? Please help.

I wish i had more info for you but I think getting it to a glass shop that specializes in repairing those are the only ones that can really let you know if it's repairable. I think they use some sort of clear liquid/epoxy stuff and fill it up. It bonds and fills the cracks (sort of ) and prevents the crack from spreading out like wildfire.

Get to the glass shop ASAP.

Check with your insurance agent. Most of us in Rockville, OOPS! I mean Colorado have windshield replacement insurance. It will usually cover the entire cost of a windshield repair. If you have to pay, its like $25 or $50. A new non-OEM windshield is several hundred dollars. An OEM windshield is a couple of hundred more. The repair will likely not be perfect but should be much better. Also, the other posters are correct. Fix it now! The star shaped ding can spread. It can do this over the course of a single day. Also if you wait longer, the crack will get tiny pieces of dirt in it and will make for a more visible repair. Oh, let your insurance agent recommend the repair person. That way you have more that one person th b*tch if they screw it up.

Thank you all for the advise. I just spoke with the Champion Auto Glass in New Jersey and the price to fix the crack is $59.95 plus tax. Is this reasonable or what? Also, they come to my place to fix it. Now I don't have to take a day off for this. They said after the fix the crack will stop spreading. Is this true? Or is it a some kind of a temporary make up? Do you think this is a good deal? Thanks.

I've had two leased vehicles in the past. Both got a small crack. I had each repaired for about $40.00. Once repaired, it stayed repaired.

Sixty bucks sounds very reasonable if they come to you to fix it.

Hey Master, you aren't by chance on Lemoine Ave are you? Just wondering because I always see a Satin Silver Type S there.

the fixes work well.

A couple of thoiughts on windshield replacement:
1) Stick with the OEM supplier - quality of replacement windows varies a lot, with wiggles and distortions evident
2) remember that the windshield is part of the SRS system - it contains and directs the airbags, and one cannot be sure it will deploy properly if the windshield does not have the "give" of the OEM. Most will, but for me I want to be sure if it comes to an airbag depoloyment.

Same thing happened to me. I couldn't stand to see the crack for a second, and rushed right to the window place. I had it replaced... no other choice. It cost about $260... total. Not bad, I thought it would be much higher.

6 cars, and this never happened to me before. New TL-S, first week, cracked window! Sucks!!!

I glad that here in Florida your insurance company is REQUIRED to pay for a replacement windshield with NO deductible.

All that - and no state income tax.... Ahhhhhh....

Update...

I have contacted my insurance company and guess what? They are paying for the crack repair up to $60 without applying my deductible and will not affect my future insurance rating. Isn't this sweet. So Mr. Chips in Hackensack, NJ (Not Champinion Auto Glass as originally posted, they could not keep up with the appointment) repaired the windshield and claimed through my insurance company directly. I paid nothing. This is a good news. However, I still see some trace of fine lines where the crack was and a visible dot. I guess this is normal. They said it will not spread anymore and their work is guaranteed as long as I own the car. Well, I hope it stays as it is now. So, anyone with a cracked (or dings) windshield should contact their insurance company before paying out of your pocket. Thanks everyone.....

MasterLee:

The dot is probably where they drilled it to inject the adhesive. Getting rid of all fine lines is virtually impossible. As I stated above, I've had the procedure done twice with no additional cracking afterwards. Good luck.

Lawman, Thank you.

BTW, when I called the Park Ave Acura asking for a repair shop recommendation, their response was "We don't do it here, look up the yellow page." WTF? I was expecting more of a courteous response. Such as "You could try such such places." Wouldn't you? I know how to look up the yellow page without him telling me. When I am in trouble, they are no help. Was my expectation too high?
