widest tire on stock 01 tl?
hey everyone... i was just wondering what the largest tire is you can put on a stock 2001 tl... i am looking at the new michelin pilot sport all season in 205/55/16... can i fit 215 or 225 without rubbing?? please hep me out.. thanks

According to TireRack.com, 215/55/16 is better than 225/55/16 on
stock TL's 16x6.5 rims, not about rubbing, but for bending the side wall
too much on a 6.5 rim with 225 tire. I am also planning to get the same tire
for my TL this winter.

oh and 225 is the widest on a TL rim 235 on a TL-S rim

Well ... that's what I thought, until I got the pilot alpines... its like night and day...... plus with 260hp driving the front wheels I found it hard on some icy/snowy days...
Depends on how much driving you do. For me the cost was weight against safety (you can't put a price on it) and the money saved from having to buy another set of regular tires sooner than necessary due to all the wheel spin and winter abuse.
Not to scare you... but I've see people spin out in my rear view on the 401 while they were trying to follow my line ... So right there I was SOLD !

Thanks for all the advice, I understand what you mean, I used to own a 96 Accord
with a extra set of Alpines for the winter, its not the money, I live in a condo,
so moving a set of tires with rims to the parking space is rather difficult.
I drive mostly between downtown and scarborough on major
road only, just traded in the Accord for a 2002 tl, so I am still
deciding wheather or not the best A/S tires is good enough for my type
of driving.

The A/S on the Pilot Sport A/S is just marketing. A friend has these on his Grand Prix and when the snow started to fall, he was forced to buy steelies with the Arctic Alpins. Consider Pilot Sport A/S to be just a summer tire with extra wet capabilities, but not for snow. Great tires though.

Vicman17, has a point. Even the stock MxM4 that come with the car are "supposed" to be allseason .... but just a little bit of rain is enough to see that they dont cut it.
It would be interesting to know what the classification/specs are for a tire to be "all season".

Pilot Sport A/S works very well on snow for certain cars, it will of course never
equal any winter tires. I may end up going back to snow tires in the winter,
but will try Pilot Sport A/S and post my finding in this forum.
For "1st Timer", you may use 205/50/16 on 1999-2003 TL, but
it is not a good idea, your speedometer reading will be off quite a bit,
and load limits will also be less, if you want
to use 50 series tire, you should go up to 17'' rims.

They found that the all season capabilities of these tires begin to diminish after the first season of winter use, hence after a year, these "all-seasons" turn into summer only tires. Their idea of marketing all season tires are for regions not experiencing intense snowfall and ice and Toronto is definitely not a place to be using A/S tires in the winter. If you are in Vancouver, you may get away with it, but when the road starts getting icy, these supposedly "all-season" are just like using slicks on wet roads.
And for high performance vehicles (like the Type-S), it is almost a must to switch to snow/ winter tires in order to be able to drive the vehicle properly and safely.

So much thought & effort regarding using performance tires for snowy winters.....I am so very thankful I live where I can keep Summer performance tires on all the time. Snow, What's snow?? Is that the white stuff I see in Christmas movies??
