Question why is modding a car so expensive?

this is what i don't get... TL is about 40K CND ... header + rim + intake + exhaust is already about 5000 CND... that's 12.5% of the car!!! and those are only the minor mods, if you want to get into the engin.... man, i don't want to think about it anymore.

Ever played the playstation game, Gran Turismo 1 or 2? Some of the cars are in US dollars and when it gets modded, look at how much $$$ you spent for those performance parts.

I think it is because people are willing to pay these inflated prices because demand are so high and there are limited number of companies that make them. I guess bottom line is that people are willing to pay for the mods.

1) It costs money to do the research and development for these performance parts. I can only imagine what costs are incurred when a Supercharger blows up a few engines before a manufacturer gets all the tuning right.
2) Many of these mods are manufactured at FAR smaller runs than an OEM part, so the R&D costs etc are amortized into less parts. (ie $500k R&D cost into 500k units built for OEM vs 50k parts for Aftermarket mods...a 10x difference in cost.
3) We gripe, we b!tch, and we whine, but ultimately, as Acura3200 said, "we pay to play!"

If mod makes you to feel good, why not spend more on that? If you think it's not worth money, don't mod your TL then.

Since we fall into the luxury category, money really should not be too much of an issue.

If we wanted to go cheap, we probably would have saved money and gotten an Accord or an Integra.

Headers more intricate than ours... 8-2-1's? or 8-1's by 2. Anyways, headers for Old Mustang's and Camaro's are some $75-$100...

They prolly run about $50 to manufacture, but demand is so high for the import scene.

Oh yeah, another thing...

Ya know how when you get in a wreck, suppose your whole front end gets smashed, need a new engine, new frame pieces, new wheels, new front suspension... etc.

Insurance will deem the car totalled, because the cost to repair the car is more than the car is worth.

Now that's something that makes sh*t for sense to me.

If 20% of the car needs to be replaced, then it should cost 20% of the car's total value!!!

It doesn't make sense that front end rebuild costs 24 grand or more. What the hell happened to the rest of the car?!

God forbid you ask a repair company to build a whole TL for you. It'd cost 6 figures!!

Anyways, my point is that aftermarket parts are like a shop rebuilding your car. They cost infinitely more than what the OEM pays to put the equivalent part on there from the factory.

Funny thing this post is up. Just a few days ago I was just curious as to how much $$$ I have spent modding my TL. Let's just say that with the $$$ I spent modding my TL, I could have gotten another nice car. Some say it is too expensive but to me it was all worth it. To me, my TL looks way better now then it did before and I love looking and driving it now more then ever.

I have heard this question before about why for instance headers for a TL or CL are so costly when compared to Integra Civic or Mustangs and Camaros. The end answer is quantity, there are countless thousands out there modding stuff like Civics and Mustangs but really how many people mod out their TL or CL.headers for these two cars are made in batches of ten hand assembled handwelded handfinished and the costs of these parts and their research and development must be spread out over a few hundred people who will actually buy a set of them or any other part that is unique to these cars.It is in the end simply a case of a car that is not widely recognized as a vehicle that is a good base to build one hell of a hotrod out of.If this perception changes there will be more manufacturers getting involved and releasing products for the cars, when this happens and more people mod the cars the prices will drop because there are more people involved and competition is driving prices down.Jens

Just like when Consumer Reports did the OEM part replacement vs. cheap ones (in RE: to insurance companies and OEM/Aftermarket repair parts)

They had a $33k explorer... build one from scratch using all OEM parts from dealers, etc... it was 6 figures
