Why do people buy 225/40/18 instead of 235/40/18?

Isn't the latter closer to stock size?

Is it because of rubbing issues?

Yes, that's correct as it is one determining reason. But if the wheel has the proper offset to begin with, 235/35?/19 will fit. Another reason lots of people go with the 225/40/18 size is also because of selection and pricing. There are more tire selection at this size, and you could probably find something half decent if the more expensive brands don't appeal to you.

Hemants ...

225/40/18 despite it not as close to the same circumference to OEM 215/50/17 as 235/40/18 ... price and rubbing are the big issues. If you've ever seen my car after the rain, you'll see why 225/40/18 might be a better choice -- I get so much CRAP on the sides of my car (worm guts, leaves, dirt, dust, etc)

Nothing is free in this world. Those tires are 93% of stock diameter. You are losing 7% of your cars value because for every mile of depreciation, you are only getting 93% of the distance.

If you ask me, a set of proper tires is not as expensive as 7% of your cars worth!

I thought the proper 18" upgrade is a 225-45-18 to keep overall tire diameter the same.

225/45/18 and 235/40/18 are both very close.

Keep This In Mind...tls = Not Stock

When you mean STOCK...are you referring to stock TLS or TLP wheels?

TLS = 215/50/17
TLP = 205/60/16

The TLS setup is already 0.9% faster than the TLP.

Now...a 215/35/18 tire is a whooping 6.9% faster...that means when your speedometer is reading 60mph, you are really going 55.9mph!

FYI: Acceptable difference is +/- 2.0%

I have 225/18/40 because I couldn't find a good tire in 225/45/18 for a decent price. The selection was limited. On the other hand 235/40/18 (my preference) I thought would rub and the fact that I rub with the 225/40/18 proves I was right.

see sig below. I knew the offset was too "low" to begin with but didn't think it would rub on stock suspension. Might roll the fenders later this spring/early summer. We'll see.

its not bad with me and a passenger but get someone in the back or take a turn too hard and it rubs a little.

Edit: oops, didn't realize I didn't have the offset in the sig...18x7.5 with a +42 offset.

Kumho

Hey Tataweki,

What is the offset/size of your wheels? I'm seriously considering 18x7.5 on my comptech drop. What do you think?

hemants, I think if the offset is +48 you should be fine. I think its recommended that we stick between 45-52 (stock wheels I thought were a 52 offset.)

But the wheels I want are Axis Se7en with +42 offset.

I may end up going with 225/40/18 to make sure. Hoping i can get away with just trimming the tab and not having to roll fenders.

If you plan on getting a camber kit, you will need to roll the fenders.

Hey TLS_RULZ ...

Do you really want to pay that kinda $$$ on OEM rims? I think there may be an offset issue with the 18" 3rd gen rims (need at least +45 and I think OEM 18" are less than +45...)

Go aftermarket, IMHO. (And I thought you didn't want to sink any more $$$ into your TL-S ???)

My wheels are Motegi FF5. Original spec was 18x7 +42. With 235/40/18 it was rubbing. So I shaved the wheels to +45, rolled fenders and now all is great. With 18x7.5, I'd recommend +45 offset or higher. But even though the tire width spec is the same, some tires are slightly wider than others. I like 235 since it fits stock diameter better, and gives me more wheel protection

I think if I'm not mistaken the 04 wheels are 18x7.5 +42, it'll rub on the TL-S

You can "shave" the wheels? How much does that run? I would think thats either pretty expensive and/or detrimental to the integrity of the wheel (I may be talking out of my ass though). I could imagine going from a 45 to a 42 offset but not the other way around.

i ran 215/35/18 for about a month or 2 and i took em off cuz every time i drove my car i thought about it adding 7 miles for every 100 miles i traveled. it sucked so i put my stock setup back on and my 225/40/ZR18 Falken Zeix 512's are in the mail as we speak

People buy 225/40 because most people buy 18"x7.5" rims. 225 is the maximum width tire you are "supposed" to fit on a 7.5" rim. Although, the 235's are the closest to the stock tire diameter.

Re: the smaller tires causing your milage to go up too fast - there's an option in the navigation system's maintenance menu that lets you change the tire size, does this only affect the nav system (and not the spedometer and milage display)?

I know they will work fine and 99/100 people will not have problems. But if you ask wheel and tire manufacters and their distributors they will tell you 225 is the maximum recommended size.

manufacturers are very conservative in their "recommendations"

Yes.. while that is true .. I was thinking that if I get a STOCK ACURA rim then I can sell the TLS rims and have $$ for tires. Also since they are ACURA rims when I sell the car I should not have any trouble ... that was my thinking anyway... and I don't think they are going to be anymore expensive than good aftermarket wheels.

It was wishfull thinking any way... My other hobby right now is going to take all my $$ for the rest of the year.

I'm running 235/40/18 on 18x8 +48 SSR GT1's with an H&R Sport drop, no camber kit, and I've got about 1mm of clearance from the metal part of the fender lip. A +42 offset with 225 tires will theoretcially stick you out 1mm more than me, so you might be able to get away with it. If you drop it, you'll definitely rub with a camber kit. To adjust my 1 degree of camber, it would push the top of my tires out about 1/4 inch . If my tires wear too unevenly, I'll probably get a camber kit and shave my fenders..

I'm using 18x7 +42 Roja Formula 5 with 225/45/18 Michelin Sport tires. I've also cut the rear bumper tabs. When the tires were new and the car fully loaded, the rear metal fenders will scrap the outer shoulders of the rear tires, not by much, just by tiny fraction of a mm too wide. Now, after many kms and shavings, all the excess rubber has been shaven off the rear tire shoulders and there is no more scrapping whatsoever.

Tatewaki, one thing you should take notice. I've done a lot of researches before selecting my wheel/tire sizes. I don't think any tire maker ever recommends mounting its 235/40/18 tires on 7" wide wheels. You can probably get away with 7.5" wheels, but not with 7". Performance and look is good, but safety is more important.
