no one knows a percentage. and trying to get a accurate # on a forum is like asking what the weather will be like in the summer of 08. Honda has not released a # of failures for the 3rd gear clutchpack. The have on the 2nd gear shaft whis is less than 1 percent (no one here has had that part fail)

These two quotes are kind of contradictory!
Not really. every thing fails at some point, its just a matter of when!

Original tranny going strong

Bought 03 TL with 11k and now it has 62k on
the original tranny. Still going strong; if you
are buying one I suggest getting the manufacturer
to throw in the 7yr/100k warranty extension.

All we did was have to ask if it had the original
transmission and they immediately offered the
warranty extension.

2002 TL-S, 60K miles now. I checked and the tranny has not been replaced before I bought it, and it's still working fine.

Way to drive the hard bargain, considering some 2003 TL were covered under the extended warranty that also covered the 99s through 2002s.

I don't want to get flamed but mine failed like 100 miles after installing the inkjet kit. And the service guy said that it is VERY common for them to fail right after getting the oiljet installed. I was at 77k and I almost wonder if it would have made it longer without the oiljet. It kind of jerked when shiftin but never anything too bad. Went out almost without warning. Oh well crap happens.

Thats a load of BS. the oil jet had nothing to do with it. If he knew any thing about what it did and what it look like in the tranny he would know that it didnt cause it, plus he would know that they cant inspect the problem either and it was most likely already going out before you brought it in

Yeah well this was the same guy who told me the 0 gauge cable was causing "too much resistance" and blamed that for my starter failing while my car was in thier care.

my tranny died around 45k. my engine died at around 55k due to "piston slap". luckily acura paid for everything and imported and installed a new one. so i pretty much have a brand new 99 tl lol.

I've gotten used to driving it with the + being forward and a few of the other cars with SS (or whatever that car company names it) that i have driven have the same set up. It's all about personal preference i guess? I never really understood the basis for converting it. Even with a regular manual tranny you do have to push the shifter forward to go into 3rd and 5th

Now if you could come up with a DIY to stop it from automatically shifting into 2nd that would be huge.

but for actual spirited driving puroposes its better the other way around. its easier to push forward while braking hard to down shift than pull back, and it makes sense to continue to pull back while accelerating

On my 99, the original tranny lasted 101,000 miles. The second one lasted 53,000 miles. Currently have 2,000 miles on my third.

It would have lasted longer if you had installed the laser kit.
