Wholly SH1T!!!

What to do, keep 2000 Tl-P or get 2001 CL-S

I have a 2000 TL-P, Paid 28,300 for it give or take. I have been reading your posts and was really interested in what the Type S could do. So I went and test drove one. I really wasnt impressed with the general speed of the car, It didn;t seem to be any faster below 4000 rpm, but above that, especially up in the 5-7's it was GREAT. The sales guy was cool, and let me run it arround some back roads, pushin over 100+ mph, and takeing the turns in Sport shift mode, pushing harder and harder. What I was REALLY IMPRESSED with was the handleing. That car would walk all over my TL. So here is my problem, and my delema...

They say they will give me 22,000 for me TL and sell me the CL-S for 30,700 or so. Numbers are not exactly right, but close. So I am looking at about 8000 bucks to up grade after only one year.
Although I was very impressed, and am still very intersted, I cant let my self spend 8000 bucks for that little difference. I could get springs, and sways and get a good alignment and I think handle that good. That would run me a grand or less. For 5-6000 I can get a Custom turbo kit made and installed, and for less than the 8000 I need to up grade, i can walk any type S.... What to do, what to do...

If i could get the difference down to 4-5000 I would hop all over it.
If I sell my tl on my own, maybe i can get 24-25000? And talk the dealership down to 29500? Then i am only out 4500-5500, I could do that...

why not get the TL type S.... the design is soo much better and the TL is lighter than the CL so it should be somewhat faster.... the engine work is the same so u got the same power w/ less weight... therefore you would go faster.... and i think that 22k is a little low for your car..... that should b around the 99s price range..... if im not mistaken....

that's actually right on for what the dealer would give on a trade in for a 2000 non-nav. I was told my 2000 w/ NAV would get around 23.5K on a trade in for a Type-S.

DON'T DO IT!!!
Spend your $$$ on mods and make it better than the Type-S.

BTW, let's say you get the "S" now and something better comes out in a year or two. Would you trade in your "S" and get the new one? I hope not. The point is, there is always something better so be happy with what you got now.

Let me correct you.

Cl-p is lighter than a TL-P

CL-S is lighter than a TL-S

Thus you arguing that the TL-S is lighter than the cl-S makes no sense. also the differance is only by like 10 lbs. I highly DOUBT that makes any differance. You could just loose weight or take some weight out and you can eaisly get 10lbs.

If I were you I'd just keep the TL. The TL is a very nice car and so is the TypeS. To tell you the truth the 01 CL-S has some minor problems like squeaking and other stuff. So IMO, not worth the extra 8000. and some people on the cl fourm has gotten the cl-s w/ navi for 28.8k. Almost right on invoice so if you DO decide to get the CL-S, just make sure you haggle it good.

If i were you I'd just wait till the 02 models came out. to fix all the nitty gritty bugs and stuff.

TL or New TL_S

I just wanted to let you know that I was in same shoe as you were just about 2 weeks ago. I had 2000 TL which I bought 8/2000. You know what I did.? I sold my TL and got the TL Type S. It is very much worth it. You have to take lots of things in to consideration. What do you owe on the car as far as loan is concern? What interest rate are you paying on your car? In my situation, I owed $20K with the interest rate of 9.5%. Since last year, the interest rates have gone down because Federal Reserve Banks has been very agressive in cutting interest rates. My new rate was at 7.42%. That made a lots of difference. I just purchsed the Type S and sold my TL for $24K. With $4K and some other money, I put down $6,800.00. My new car payment is $469 per month for 6 year financing. My payment went up by $25.00 with the new interest rate. I did loose some money but not a lot. This is also with navigation sys on the type S. My 2000 TL did not have Navi. If I would have got Type S W/O Navi, my payment would have been the same. I would not try to put Turbo or Super Charger on the TL. I don't think it is reliable. I also talk to many mechanics and they did not recomend that. The compression ratio has to be change also if you were to put turbo or super charger(10.5:1 to 8.5:1). I would not mess around with that. It might make your car fast but you are looking for problems and also later on when you try to sell you car, you are going to have a problem.

I would strongly recomend that you get the Type S with the money you are going to use to modify the TL.
To help you, I got my Type S for $31,300 and paid $33,950 out the door with tax & license. this was $700 over invoice. You should be able to get Type S W/O Navi for about $31,900 out the door.

Invoice: $28,150
Destinaton Charge: $480
Mud Guard & Wheel Locks: $200 (Approx. Dealer Cost)
Navigation System: $1800 (Dealer Cost)
Tax & Lic: Depends on where you live but If you live in CA, its around 8.5% of total cost.

I hope this helps

One more thing, If you are planning to get the CL-S, It should be much cheaper. There are very much demand for TL-S in CA. Especially the ones with Navi. But if you are planning to get the CL-S, You shoud be able to get $500 over invoice. There are less demand for the CL-S because they been around long than the
TL-S. Just on Personal though, I would much rather get TL-S. It looks much better and its 4 door.
