Post Whoa... I bought a first gen Tl today.

After heckling with a dealer for two weeks, I finally got happy with the car. I had the dealer replace the rear wheel bearings (is this a common problem?? There was a ton of noise in the back of the car). What could have caused this problem if its not just a flaw in the design?? It does have after market rims on it. Could it be the alignment? I don't know, but I can defenitely see why this car has such a following. It is a wonderful piece of machinery. There are many little details that amaze me. The handling was suprisingly aggresive for a luxury vehicle. Are there any other first generation Tl owners that have replaced the timing belt? When did you replace it?? I'm looking forward to becoming a member of this board. Peace out doods.

From one first gener to another, welcome aboard. It nice to see some more people represent the old school TL. If I were you, I would replace that timing belt ASAP. It does have about 90K on it right? If so, then DO NOT delay. You'll be gald you did. Enjoy the ride!

Polyman,
Why do you recommend replacing the timing belt immediately?? Do they all go bad at 90k? What will it cost? I've heard anywhere between 200-900 bucks. Damn. Lots of money.

Welcome! I have a 1st Gen also and I love it! The timing belt should be replaced at 70K and I asked the dealer once how much it costs and he said $325. Good luck with your new car!

Its a risk/payoff type thing. Losing a timing belt causes near-total destruction of your engine. Fork out the $200 and be happy.

It will cost AT LEST $200 to replace. It's pretty much all labor. I suggest this because you unfortunately don't know how the car was driven beforehand and it has high mileage. It will give you peace of mind and as jmboone said, your engine (and pocketbook) will thank you. Perhaps the dealership you bought your TL at will give you a deal of sorts to replace the timing belt. Was it an Acura dealership or independent? Good luck!
