You need to reread it. That 1-2% is ONLY for the 2nd gear shaft failure. No one here that i know of has had that failure. Its also what the Recall is for to add the oil jet. The Failures we all have are of the 3rd gear clutchpacks which the 100k warranty extension is for. There are 2 separate issues these trans have.

If you look at the used card guide from CR the 2nd gen TL has the lowest rating for transmission reliability.

Yeah, some people here have had problems, but its not a truly representative sample of people's experiences with TL's. The people who have had transmission problems are in a small minority, but you'd never know that hanging out here. That's all I'm saying.
Consumer Reports has been giving the 1999-2003 TL transmissions very poor reliability numbers for years now. Based on the subscriber surveys, the 4-speed transmission in the 1999 TL gets a "worse than average" rating. The 5-speed transmission in the 2000-2003 TL gets a "much worse than average" rating and that's the lowest score they give out.

I understand the argument that internet forums tend to magnify the severity of a problem. But, in the case of the second generation Acura TL transmissions, the reliability problems are backed by legitimate statistical data.

Original owner and 1st (and only) tranny died at 234,000 miles. I now have 267,000 miles and running strong. 99tl. I hope this doesn't throw off your theories, but I recommend NOT changing the fluid.

Not all of them, most of the 99s dont have problems until their later years. And some have problems sooner than others because they are neglected service and flushes/maintenance.

You should be able to get a rebuilt transmission for much less than the dealer quoted you. The previous owner of my 1999 TL had a new transmission installed last year for about $3,200 through his local Acura dealer. Except for the original housing, every internal part was replaced and the transmission came with a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty.

And independent shops could probably do it for much less.

Another option would be to install a used transmission but who knows how long that would last.

If you sell it now you probably won't get much for it because of the failing transmission.

2003 TL-S with 99,600 miles on the original... Every now and then it seems to hesitate when upshifting at a very low speed, but it's been fine otherwise.
