When To Start Using Mobil One??

Hey guys I have a 2003 TL-Sw/17,000 miles, I've changed the oil many times.Last time coming from dealership.I was wondering when is a good time or right time(Does it even Matter??) to think about switching to synthetic oil (Mobil One),and is there any negeative effect or positive effect I might face from using synthetic oil too early. And whats do people out there use 10/30-15/40.......Thank You In advance

You can start using it right now. Just use what viscosity is printed on the oil filler cap and I wouldnt even worry about flushing your engine with that many miles.

If you do use M1 use the extended mileage series.

With the mileage that you have, it should not be a problem to switch it. I did mine when my TLS was at 5,000 miles. I switched it to Mobile One 5w30 and change it every 5k miles.

Hope this helps.

Cheers !!!

Do you think the amsoil is worth the difference in price??
I'm on the fence as to which one to buy

No

just get Mobil 1 synthetic with the Mobil 1 filter and you will be good to go for at least 7k miles between changes. I usually do it around 7-9k miles (whenever I get to it in that time). I switched at 60k miles (all with dyno oil) and I am now to the sad point of 100k miles. There are no leaking problems at all - I dont believe that is a problem now with modern engines and oils. oh ya, I use 5w-30 year around.

I switched to synthetic (RedLine 5w-20) in both my new TL's. The 2002TLS ran great, now I've got a '04 TL. Both were changed from dyno to synthetic at the 2nd oil change. The '04 TL had approx 3800 miles when I switched.

Amsoil oil is good for 15K and their EA filters are good for 25K or one year & is high capacity.

I would go with the Series 3000 5w-30 & EA filter for a one year oil change which is what I run. The series 3000 will save you some gas to.

TLS at 63000

I am thinking about switching to synthetic oil however my car is at 63000 miles. Is there any special things I have to do to prep the car for synthetic oil at this point? Like motor flush, etc? Thanks

No, I don't think so. Just regular drain and fill. And make sure, you get a decent (good) filter.

I switched to 0w20 mobil 1 synthetic around 48000miles, and I change oil every 5000 miles, I get excellent mileage and also very good starting in freezing cold michigan weather.

nope, I switched at just about the same time - just drain and fill with the good stuff

Fram filters are fine...just not the best by any means. You can get the Mobil 1 filter at Auto Zone, it is a much better filter for a few more bucks. I wouldnt spend the extra money on Amsoil on the other hand - you can get the Mobil 1 synthetic from Wal Mart in the 5Q jug for a little over $20

0w20?! What is the difference between 0w20 and 5w20? 0w20 is fine? You change your oil every 5000 miles? I thought with mobil 1 synthetic you could go all the way to 7500 miles between changes or even 10000 miles.

Use Mobil 1 oil with a Mobil 1 filter and change it at the reccomended oil change interval(7500miles), sound good? OR Is it still too soon and wasting my money? Will switching to synthetic this late into the car's life even help or make a difference?

I just hit 90k and I'm thinking of making the switch at the next oil change. I go to the dealership to get it changed but does anyone know if they have the mobil1 there or do I need to buy it and bring it over there when I go.

Depend on your dealer. Some use Castrol Syntec, while other use Mobil1. Besides, it is cheaper to buy from outside. Dealer will charge you about $30 more for synthetic. In the end, you'll be paying for about $40 for 5 qt, assuming $10 for dino oil and $30 for the synthetic upgrade. A 5qt jug at Wal-mart is $20

I switched to Mobil 1 5W30 after all the freebie oil changes that the dealer gave me. Initially, they didn't seem to mind me bringing in my own jug of Mobil 1 5W30 but recently, the service rep sorta read me the riot act about sticking to 5W20 and how 5W30 "might" affect my warranty so forth,etc...

I guess Honda was telling them to stick to the OEM spec oil or try to push for the Motul 5W20 they have available for close to $80.00.

Haven't seen much of Mobil1 5W20 here in Toronto.

I think the same TL's from years 99-00 have recommed to use 5w30 and the same cars from 01 and up are suppose to use 5w20. Maybe they use 5w20 just so when they do testing they can say their cars are more efficient run. Just a thought.

i just switched to mobile1 synthetic this past weekend.. i drove to ohio from tampa with the 10w30 synthetic blend (put about 1500 miles on that oil change), changed it before i came back and now with about 1300 miles on the 10w30 synthetic oil it still looks brand new. the engine runs alittle smoother too.

As for switching, I ask what's the gain over using conventional oil? Will you own the car long enough to recoup he cost or see the benefits?

I've seen "dyno" oil twice in this thread..time to correct that. It's "dino" as in dinosaurs, who created "fossil" fuels. It's not dyno as in dynamometer.

Dino=dinosaur=fossil fuels.
