When I put the car in SS mode........

If I'm driving in "regular drive mode" and I'm going about 40 -50 mph and then I throw it in "SS Mode" I'm already in 4 speed. There isn't a way that it can go down to maybe 2nd and then I can upshift going the speed I'm going to maybe get some more speed out of my bi@!#?

I don't know about the 4 speed, but in my 5 speed 3rd gear has all kinds of power.

Our SS is so slow I can be in D4 and slam it to SS4 passing through D5 at over 100 MPH and not even feel the shift.

So when I'm already in "SS Mode" in 4, I cant really do anything else except slam the gas peddle. I wanted to know If I can drop it in 3rd and then go back to fourth to gain some extra pick up or speed( Would that hurt the tranny) I hope this isn't a stupid question. I'm new to the TL. I just got it about 2 weeks ago so I'm just trying to figure it out.

Its somewhat like a manual trans car. Yes you can downshift into 3rd gear with the sport-shift. The owners manual will tell you the proper gear to be in when shifting.

Yep. And if you are at too high of a speed, and try to shift into a lower gear, it won't let you. The LED will just flash. So, if you were in SS 3rd gear going, let's say, 85 mph, and you tried to shift into 2nd, the computer would not let you, and the LED displaying the 3 would flash a couple times.

I've "heard" this is what happens. Not like "I" would ever try that.

since the ss wont let u drop ur tranny like a normal stick shift car, why not just keep it in SS and let it take the car to the redline and then shift... its not bad if u take it to redline and shift compared to keeping it at redline... my suggestin, watch the tach and change it around 5000RPMs.... as for drop shifting, if ure at 60mph, throw it into 3rd... ull kick it faster than the delay u get from stomping on the gas IMO

From what I have noticed... It is just like riding a motorcycle, but without the clutch action. The shifting of gears is in a sequential manner 1, 2, 3,..., 6 (oops, I mean 5) 5, 4, 3, ..., 1 In SS mode the car will shift down automatically as speed is reduced and will shift from second to first below 12 mph (?) and at WOT under 3800 rpm (?). I personaly have not gauged second to third although I think second can get to 70 mph (?). Definetly the most usable shift is 3-4-3 where the car is going about 100 in redline and 105 over redline. Although shifting down from fourth is indicated as not possible over 80 mph, the tip provided by RUF - at least I think it was him I read it from - which is to let off the gas for a mili-second followed by the drop to third and WOT again will allow the shift to happen and get you into the sweatest of powerband spots. I have also noticed that by slightly touching the redline in third you can set up the reves in the high VTEC profile when shifting into fourth - very effective method to keep the BIGAZZGRIN on your face.

Napsoner:
It's OK, just move into SS mode, keep your foot on the gas, and DOWNSHIFT!!!! Everything will be fine, enjoy the ride.

ps. like Sim says, if you do this at limits exceeding the engineering design, you'll just see the gear LED flash. No biggy. (ie, if you're doing 85 and try to shift into 2nd => not gonna happen, therefore you don't kill your tranny. of course the tranny seems to kill itself, so there's nothing you can do )
