Question What's wrong with the 3rd Gear???

I sometimes experience when trasmission doesn't pop into 3rd gear when its needed. It feels like you're stepping on gas but the car chokes.
Does any of you experienced that?

p.s. I might have not explained it right, but list the problems that you've encountered with your tranny.

whenever im goin around 85-90 mph and need to pop it into 3rd...it wont let me..it just keeps it in 4th....but....if u put it in sport shift and left off the gas, it will let u go into 3rd and punch it.....try it

I have a similar problem on my 2001 CL, Type S. When I'm cruising on 5th gear at like around 80 mph...and then press down on the gas to accelerate, there is a slight hesitation and the transmission jolts as it shifts into the lower gear. This doesn't happen all the time and I've taken it to the dealer to inspect and they can't seem to duplicate the problem. They said it will shift rough during hard acceleration, but I'm not even accelerating that much from 80 mph. I've read a lot of posts about people having problems with these SS transmissions.

I had that experience once and it hasn't happened since. Our transmissions "learn" the driving habits its owners and through time will adapt to different throttle responses. Now I notice that the car downshifts into 3'rd gear very eagerly- sometimes even when I don't want it to. I may be crusing in 5'th gear and want to pass someone but I don't want to blow past them. I have to put the accelerator around half way down to go into 4'th but too far down and boom! I'm in third doing over 5000 RPM's. Maybe your transmission is still "learning".

well if it's still learning, it seems to take a long time to learn. i almost have 13,000 miles on my car...maybe it's because i don't always drive the same....sometimes, i'm pretty aggressive and accelerate hard...and then a lot of the times, i just kick back and don't rev past 4 on some drives...

When in doubt, put it in SportShift. I always pop the shifter into SportShift when I'm expecting to pass someone or accelerate onto a highway. Then I choose which gear is appropriate for the situation. Once I get back to cruising, I pop the shifter back to D5.

actually the ecu of the car learns the way you drive. If you constantly drive aggresive, the car will leave it in gear longer than usual even if youre barely tapping the gas. this learning thing happens in alot of cars these days, especially Japanese cars. This way, a grandma can get a smooth drive out of her car(and good gas mileage!!), and a younger driver can get the performance out of his car all the time.

Hmmm... what does that mean for the breakin period when you're driving very lightly and not really revving past 4000 rpm?

Once your through breakin and start opening her up will the tranny still adapt?

I guess according to this thread the answer is yes...

I really dig the anticipation the car has as you start to slow down, and you feel the car down shift with you (kinda like engine braking) is that the grade logic at work?

In regards to this "learning transmission" topic, what if you have two totally different drivers that share this car (one very aggressive and the other a grandma driver)? Does that mean it's totally screwed up because the transmission does not know what to do?

Too bad I couldn't wait for the 6-speed CL-s manual.

One of the after market mod manufacturers could make some money if they produced either a new 4th - 5th gear, or a complete new tranny. I HATE the feeling shifting into 4th, like you are suddenly driving in a tar pit...

That's one of the main reason why I leave the shifter in SS 99% of the time, with average RPM at 2,500 I try to keep the rev as close to max torque as possible when driving....anything below 2000 rpm, TL-S drives like a slug...
