What is Vtech? / old GTi mop up!
What is Vtech?......
Ok I know...how can I not know this! But I know the Vtech kicks in at about 3800-4000 rpm's.....what I want to know is what exactly is the Vtech in a Vtech engine....is it just the name of the engine or is it something that it does once that you hit that rpm range or is it both the name and something that happens once that rpm range is hit? Someone said a while back that it's just the name of the engine.
Gti Mop up......
So I am going down rt 60 in Medford...I was in the front of a pack of fellow commuters, I see every couple seconds some xenon ultra whites switch lanes back and forth through the slow traffic, I don't think much of it. Then I noticed he past all the slow movers and was coming up on me so seeing as I was with my wife and I didn't feel like racing I move to the slow lane expecting him to pull in to the fast lane at the traffic light, he does as expected. So I glance over and notice he had rims, it was lowered, exhaust, and some kind of intake by the way it sounded...it was cold and te only reason I heard this was because he started looking over at me and revving his engine, so I tell my wife to buckle up, I switch to SS, light turns green...he floors it I can just hear his enigine working hard as hell...I press firmly on my pedal and was able to stay half a cars length in front....just to let him think he might be able to get me.....at this time I am in 3rd gear doing about 80....so after a second or 2 of messing around I floor it and switch to 4th and I'm gone.....
Oh the fun I had....So right after we get home I say to my wife, don't drive as I do, drive as I say...

It is the name/type of engine and also what you described about when it kicks in as far as performance.

It opens up/uses a second set of cams. That is why you notice your fuel gauge dropping as you are in the Vtec range. Basically you are just opening your engine up a bit more and allowing it to perform at a higher level. Like having a 2 for 1 srteet driver and perfornmance engine all under one hood.

First of all, it's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control.

If you look at a VTEC cam there are 3 lobes per cylinder(on a dohc engine anyway). 2 are used normally on the "low cam" setting, when the engine reaches the VTEC engagement point, an electronic selenoid opens up allowing oil to flow in and lock the 3rd set of rockers causing the larger VTEC lobe to be used.
And what the 3rd lobes do is increase duration and lift on your intake valves, letting more air in, producing more combustion, hence more power. Now keep in mind VTEC isn't a power thing, its more of a fuel efficiecy technology.

Hehe..I've raced my friend's older model GTI. I was coming home from my friends house and had four other people in my car. He started revving and he's a pretty good driver. I turn VSA off..AC off... Well..light turns green and we're pretty even because of my tires spinning for what seemed to be a long ass time. Once I got traction, I just kept on pulling and pulling on him ahha..pretty funny. But ..we were both stock lol.
