What are some signs of tranny failure waiting to happen?

From experience or what you guys have seen, what are some major or minor signs that people have that show they have tranny problems?

I am very paranoid now, and I wouldn't be able to tell just by driving, unless someone can point out something specific?

well for me, it was hard shifting, or a delay in the shifting...... jumping tach.... slipping in gears...

I got all on it and it went from 2nd gear to 5th gear to 1st to 3rd...It was fried instantaneously when it decided to go.
Leading up to it, it would just shift slowly--almost like a clutch that was about to die--long and drawn out in some gear but shift very hard going into 2nd and even noticably jerky into 5th. The new tranny does not do any of this (post computer replacement as well). The safety issues some talk about I did not experience at all. Nothing locked up or anything of the sort. Just upshifted and downshifted weirdly...
Then, in case I was a drivelling idiot and could not tell, the little yellow transmission light came on which would probably indicate something was wrong...

Anybody have a rattling come from the engine compartment at a stop? I noticed it for a while before my tranny went. Then they replaced it and the rattle went away. Now, it's starting to come back.

i am now one of the lucky ones with a tranny failure...i just got my car back from the dealer today...original tranny swapped at 25148 miles...replaced w/ new rebuilt tranny and swapped PCM (ECU)....there was harsh shifting from 1-5 and it would redline for a second or so b4 it would go into gear...i felt the car jerk hard in every shift...it even jerks in reverse too...hopefully this new tranny will last a long time...laters

I just got mine back from dealer today after having trans and PCM replaced at 35k miles. It would jerk into each gear and sometimes go into redline and not shift gears. The new oen doesn't feel good to me though. Feels like there is alot of engine braking going on. Does It have like a break in period again? Will it get smoother after a few hundred miles?
