As you guy know, our TL is not a shiner in the gas consumption. 4 months ago I bought TL-2 blue lovely but increasing gas is starting to worry.
Station next to my home posted 3.85$ for premium today, if it reaches over 6$ a gallon, selling is becoming a reasonable idea for me although I love it a lot.

I'm not sure what the 2nd gen TL's get, but my '04 does great with gas. The recent Consumer Reports auto issue gives their combined average mileage as tested, not the wildly optimistic numbers that people quote from brochures and ads.
Mine is averaging exactly what they got, 23 mpg. There are lots of four cylinder sedans that get that (or even worse in the case of domestics). I'm of the opinion that the 3rd gen is pretty amazing as far as the mileage vs. luxury equation goes.
What's better without giving up too much?

Porkchop Sandwiches!
Honestly right now gas in my neck of the woods is fast approaching $4, but I'm just happy that I can get upwards of 25mpg mixed driving. My last car got 18mpg HIGHWAY! So all in all i wouldn't think about changing to something more thrifty unless it hit like $4.75 or something.

Whatever you would spend for a replacement car would greatly exceed what you might lose in a little mpg for the TL vs. other cars. It's the same philosophy of replacing what you have with a hybrid. Unless you're in the market for a new car, replacing one good car with another hybrid/ lesser car/ 4 cyl. = money lost secondary to depreciation, and it will be a very long time before you recoup the loss.
This is all aside from the fact that the TL in general is capable of ~ 26 mpg on average. Not bad for a decent size car with a V6.

When 5 dollars a gallon is a fond memory of the start of '08,
who would want to buy our rides with mid 20s for mileage anyway.
When its bad- econoboxes will rule once again, just like 1972 and the oil embargo-
ask your grandparents about gas lines, alternate day plates and 10 gallon limits...
What I want is an electric car with a plug in windmill on its fender so it recharges while you drive- seems like the simple solution overall- Trademark-Patented Idea!!! 01tl4tl

I already spend 55 a tank, on a good day!!!
Ca is pricey gas 4.plus for 91 and it goes up to 4.25 in the next town
OPEC announced it will not increase production-- because the high pricea are not due to a shortage of gas supplies.... meaning it IS gouging by all parties, and they have no reason to change that profit margin~
Know why the govt wants ethanol fuel and big oil says great idea!
It takes huge amounts of fossil fuel in order to make ethanol or seperate hydrogen molecules for those type cars. Its all a scam IMO

I think before you talk about changing cars, I want to know what the options that we're talking about. What are they?
I've run the numbers, not one of the pruis cars pays to drive it.
30mpg highway seems like it's better then most.

NEVER!!!! I'm keeping this car until it dies! I'll just drive it less aggressively to get better mileage. I think I'll start alternating between the TL and my sister's Passat since she's in Japan for a few months. 1.8L Turbo and 25 MPG in-town FTW!!

i fill up once every 10-14 days ...so its not really an issue especially since i have no car payment... but i still think the tl gets respectable mileage especially for the power you get with it.

I dont think im ever giving up my car either. After the swap, i should be getting a little better mileage. Plus this is my dream car. Its what i've wanted since i was 16, and when i finally had the money, i jumped on it. Although the color i wanted was always silver with black interior, abp with black leather was also my second choice. at the time, the type-S didn't even come out yet, so you can imagine how i felt when i found out i can squeeze in an extra 35HP into the car stock

I'm never giving it up for gas prices. First of all the re-sale isn't so great for a 2nd gen TL, secondly I'd obviously have to down grade cars (civic, corolla, 4cyl camry, 4cy accord). Buying a 2nd car means shelling out the cash for the actual car, gas, maintence.
So it would cost more money having two cars just to save $ on gas. Lastly, if you change your driving habbits, and treat the TL like it's a 95 DX auto you will see a great imrovement in your mileage. With my new job I'm now 85% highway and I'm seeing 28.7 mpg driving 70-72mph. I think thats pretty good.
Gas here on Long Island NY (premium) is anywhere from $3.94 (0n sale) to $4.05 a gallon. I try to fill up when they have the 6 cents off deals.

in fact gas is such a non factor to me, when my time is up with the tl i have my eye on a v8 (06-up Infiniti M45) when my pockets allow it :-)

Getting rid of a car because of gas is stupid. Odds are your going to spend more and down grade to get a car that gets slightly better mileage. Also gas prices arent going to change. We have had it far too good for far to long. Its time that we cought up to the rest of the world and we got used to it.
Try filling up 2 expedition gas tanks (30 gallons) and the TL every week. The TL gets filled pretty close to every day and the expedition tanks get filled twice a week for one, once a week for the other. Im dropping close to 500 a week on gas and im not going to change vehicles.

it'll be a cold day in hell before i step into a 4cyl civic

I wouldn't give up this car even if gas was $10/gal.
For me it would probably amount to maybe an additional $2-$3K/yr if gas went to $6/gal.
Not worth it, I really love this car.

Until there's an absurd breakthrough in engine/car/efficiency, it really wouldn't make a difference to get a few extra MPG (well L/100km :p).
She'll have to die on me before she gets replaced.
And even if there was some miraculous breakthrough, I'd still keep her what with being awesome. I'd have to blow the doors off these imaginary breakthrough cars.

I actually compared driving a 4 cylinder car and my TL. I actually get better gas milage with the TL than a Mazda 3 (2.3L). I usually average 350 a tank on the TL the Mazda i can't get it over 320 a tank.
So, to your question i won't get rid of my car.

I'll only give up my '02 TL-S for another car with more power, never on the price of gas.

if the gas price goes up THAT high, that means out salary also will go up too.
Right now, US economy is struggling but increasing in our salary will cure these problems. And it WILL happen by either Obama or Hilary. Trust me
