Question What do they replace when your tranny fails?

I had my first tranny die at 50k. Now, my second "replacement" is acting up. What exactly do they replace the transmission with? I was given the explanation that there is a computer that adjusts the car to your driving style, and it is prone to send an incorrect signal to the transmission which causes it to slip or over-rev. If this is the case, it sounds like a faulty computer is causing the physical transmission to fail.

When they replace the transmission, do they replace it with new OEM parts? Do they replace the transmission but leave the computer in place? Do they replace the tranny and upgrade the computer to a new (fixed) one?

I don't want my transmission to have to be replaced again...

Well... anyone... Do they replace the broken tranny with a new tranny that will have the same problems all over again?

It is a new tranny and a computer chip to adjust the way the car shifts...

Or at least that is what they told me they were putting in.

Is the chip an OEM chip, or is it an improved one? If they put the same (but new) chip in, won't the car have the same problems all over again?

Kinda off topic but if I have a 4 speed transmission on my 99 will they replace it with a five speed. I know it wont make huge differences but idk it would just be nice to have a five speed. Also is there any way even if I had to pay extra, to get them to intall a m/t? Thanks for the help,
John

well when you have our tranny replaced now, its supposed to be a updated tranny (1 with the problem fixed) and you will also get a new ecu to help improve the shifts. my shifting has been improved since the ecu change.
and for jwt27106's question, no they wont put a 5 speed in, unless you were paying for the upgrade

Hmm, so they put in a new ECS too. Any ideas why the trannys continue to fail multiple times?

If they replace the Trans, does the warranty cover the new trans for 100,000 miles after it is installed, or does the warranty still apply to the car only?

From my knowledge transmissions that go bad are sent to japan for repair. That is why U.S dealerships are not allowed to open/repair our transmissions.

You will most likely be recieving a "used" transmission unless you are lucky enough to have a local dealership w/ new transmissions on stock, let alone u will pay MUCH MORE

I talked to an Acura mechanic. He said that basically the shifting of the transmission is totally controlled by the computer. So when your trans. goes out, it and the computer are replaced just in case the computer was bad and ruined the trans. He said that there are no mods done to the replacement computers. I guess it depends on which mechanic you talk to though.

From my experience.... I've been through two replacements. The first replacement was a piece of crap - it felt sluggish and started to slip after a hundred miles. I was fortunate enough to deal with the Sunnyside Acura, NH. They have a terrific guy - David. When I asked, he told me that all replacements are just repaired trany’s - no new ones! Then I asked him to talk to Acura people who deal with the trany replacement and make sure that they don't sent transmission that had had the same issues (whining noise in addition to slipping and delays). He did and when they replaced it for the second time - what a difference! I am having it for about 10K now and so far, so good (knock on the wood)!

I was told that depending on when you replaced the tranny you did or did not get your ECU changed. If you changed your tranny a year ago they only changed the tranny, nothing else. They only recently in the last few months/year realized they needed to change the ECU as well. Now they all get changed. I think that would explain why some people have gone through multiple trannies and other only one. That is what I was told by Park Ave Acura and they've been pretty good about things.

I think the new tranny will be under warranty for at least 50,000 miles. If you have problems with it after that they might say it's normal wear. I think the 100,000 mile warranty is only for the original tranny, after that it's the original warranty. But I doubt they would give you problems if your second one went out.
Don't quote me on this.

I was told that the tranny is warrantied for the 'issue' that causes the tranny to die up until 100,000. But it is just for that issue, if something else happens to the tranny it would be money out of our pocket...

'issue?' I thought they changed the entire tranny as opposed to fixing the issue?

the tranny is NOT covered for 100,000 miles!!!!!!!! it will be covered on your car until your car hits 100,000 miles. if you are at like 98,000 miles it will becovered for 12,000 just like if you were to go in and have it replaced on any of there other type of cars. i was told this when i had my last tranny replaced at 115k. honda gave me the free replacement because they said the 1 before it didnt have the upgrade, and the ecu replacement. they said that this one would be warrantied for 12,000 miles, just like if i were to go in and buy 1

Maybe its just me, but I would think that in the year 2004, after almost 100 years of automobile mass production, they could engineer a transmission with a shelf life of over 12,000 miles or 50,000 miles. Why has Acura had such a hard time with transmissions in their cars? Aren't Transmissions as common as the engines that drive them?

I bought my car with the intention of driving it for years, well over 100,000 miles. That is why I chose Acura/Honda. If transmission failure is the case, they may have lost a customer down the road.
