just hardwire them to the car. depending on the kind of detector you have, some make hardwire kits

The 2nd gen TLs have 2 lighter sockets. One is the visible one in the front and theres another one in the center console. If the wire is long enough on one of them you can probably go that route if you dont want to hardwire anything.

definitely go with hardwiring. but NEVER tap onto yellow wires. yellow = indicative of airbag wires.

I hardwired my v1 and my XM I have the wires under the wood trim in the center and plugged into the 2nd lighter. I used a dremmel to cut a small hole to get the cord through so there were no wires popping out. I have a splitter in the arm rest with my cell phone charger in there. If I use my navi, I just use the lighter in the front.

I found a power recept. at O'reilly auto parts with a mounting tab. Under the left side dash fuse panel cover there's a bolt that worked great to mount it. Plenty of room for it and with the fuse panel right there it's really convenient to connect. Then run the wire for whatever you plug into it up the trim/pillar to where ever you want. Tidy.

That's the best way if the device is going to stay in the car but if you need to move it (such as a portable GPS) often you need the plug.

If its in the car one car more than others why not get a hard wire kit and hard wire it. When it needs to be moved to another car use the cord it came with? My GPS unit gets moved between 3 vehicles. I have a hard wire in each. All i have to do is unplug and move it to the vehicle in need. No unsightly cords laying across the dash.

Like I said, that's best- if you have a different device that needs power occasionally an extra socket is still useful tho.

I bought a multi-plug from Radio Shack a while back (makes 2 plugs out of 1 plug) and I can plug two devices in at one time. Haven't blown a fuse yet.
