what are the casues for terrible gas milage?

This has been an on-going issue for me, and I never knew how to fix it. But lately it's gotta alot worse.

I filled up my tank all the way, and reset the trip odometer to record the milage. The first time I got 160 miles until the low fuel light went on, and the second time I got 147 miles. I do about 65% City driving, and 35% Highway driving.

What could the causes be for this? How can I get it fixed?

If you havent already i would use seafoam in the gas/oil/vac. line. Also changing the air filter will help. Are you using premium gas?

Duhhhhh!!!! Before you go spending money on SeaFoam etc.....check out your driving style. Lead Food=Poor gas mileage. It doesn't take much....my 6MT can get 30+mpg highway..but as soon as I start revving the engine, having fun going thru the gears..it drops to the mid teens before I can fill the tank. Just a thought...have fun!

I think I have a normal driving style, I dont rev alot, and hardly "drive it like I stole it", so any other suggestions?

Not really...except the air filter thing.

I'm on the same boat =/

200 miles per tank Mostly city... I installed the comptech cai less than a yr ago. I dont understand! Going to clean my throttle body out and Intake Manifold when it gets warmer. Maybe thats the problem? And hopefully that'll remove some of the trembling when idling.

how many miles do you have on your car?

try replacing the primary o2 sensor.

also try using fuel cell cleaner

Are you tires inflated properly? Do you need a tune-up maybe, like new plugs? Check you air filter for debris too.

over 60k miles is ready for a new set of NGK Iridium spark plugs
Seafoam or stp or whocares brand of fuel cleaner in the tank for sure to clean the injector spray pattern. You cant reach the filter sock without removing the gas tank- using any cleaner will help!

Rough idle is often the EGR ports inside the intake manifold are plugged- remove intake manifold and clean- see DIY or EGR and Thermoblock install
The K&N can be cleaned yearly if you live in bad dusty air, make sure to follow the instructions on reoiling- leading cause of problems is too much oil used, and it gets sucked onto the TB plate.
So clean everything, pull a plug and see how worn it looks. check everything everyone said
How long has this been going on??
I average 22.4 with combined city/hwy driving, and at least in the 200s before refill when being escaped mental patient driving

man I've had the exact same issues;
- I drive like a little bitch
- NGK plugs, K&N air filter
- had the injectors clear with that machine
- premium gas, tires at 35 psi
* YOU NAME IT I'M DONE IT TO TRY AND IMPROVE MY MIELAGE
* WHY COULD THEY BUILD THE TL WITH A 4 CYLINDER ON/OFF SWITCH.

Haven't done the seafoam b/c none avail in Toronto and I dont' think that they ship b/c of the type of substance. But I will find a way to do it this summer. I'm luck if I get 400km or 250miles on full tank of premium gas and its gets even worse. In toronto we have winter blend gas which is even worse for mileage.

Plugs are rated to 100k.

I suspect you have something else going on. Like you're running rich, or you aren't driving as softly as you think.

Fill up, and try keeping the revs under 2.5k. Run the tank till the like comes on. Refill and report back with miles and gals.

Good friend of mine claims to drive gentle. He only brings the revs up to 4k. And he wonders where his gas goes.

FYI - this board is seafoam crazy. It appears to be the cure all for any car troubles.

The amount of stop lights and how frequent you accelerate and stop really play a roll in your mileage.

rob2 maybe you should try it!!!- many of us find the investment worth the payoff
Plugs RATED to 100k-hahaahahahah, not so
the book says under normal service- and if you pull yours after 60 you will find signifigant wear, and new ones improve many facets of engine running condition
Just like some cars really need a timing belt before 105- certain conditions make things change

I have absolutly no mods done to the engine, like I said, the only thing I did was change the air filter about a year ago with a K&N filter.

The car has exactly 69,610 miles. I also used somekind of Feul Cleaner about a month ago. I drove till the tank was empty, poured in the whole bottle, and then filled up the tank with Shell V-Power gas.

All my tires are inflated at 34~35 PSi. I usually drive normally, between 2-3k rpm, but sometimes reach 4-5k rpm. When I'm on the highway and there's no traffic, then I go about 70 - 80 mph.

Although I've never changed my spark plugs, I did seafoam last summer but the guy that did it for me used the older method with the old vac line, which I heard only cleans like 3 cylinders.

You want to use fuel cleaners at the max amount cleaner to minimum fuel- not diluted into a full tank- shell is good gas choice
Seafoam the intake again- with the new place and enjoy~
Coul be ready for EGR ports cleaning
Its time for plugs, only those who have changed theirs need comment on this.

Has anyone heard of the Tornado?

I saw this infomercial a while ago, the Tornado is a sort of statutory fan with a ring around it. it reduces the injection of fuel while speeding it up, kinda like putting your thumb over a hose. Result? more power, less gas, or so they say.

So in about a month or so, I'll be getting ready to bring my car in for a 70k service, and here's what I'm planning on doing:

Seafoam everything, drive around for about 2-3 days, and come back to get the spark plugs changed with the NGK Iridium IX, get oil changed with Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5w20 (is that the correct one?), get my K&N Air filter cleaned, and do the EGR Cleaning.

Anything else that I'm missing?

Also, how much do you guys think would be a fair price for a mechanic to charge for all that work? and please dont tell me that I could do all this myself, I would if I would have some tools and experience, and I have neither of that.

I find it so cute that you believe in what you see on late night TV infomercials.

The Tornado works awesome on certain carberated cars and certain fuel injected cars.
In the Maxima and the 80 chevy V8, it made a measurable differance,
test on the TL made me glad there was a money back guarantee

It does not work with the TL because of the built in VTEC system which creates a Tornado type swirl in the combustion chamber at high rpm.

New plugs- pull the intake manifold and clean the EGR, good air filter and you have done what you can.
A few ziners are currently testing the PulseStar plugs to se if they really do improve mileage for our cars. I dont care how it works on anything but the TL

You mean the TL with the ULEV status?

The TL gets 26 mpg highway, which is fairly good.

^^ You can take your car to a good mechanic and have them check out your O2 sensors to make sure they're within specs. They can be out of range and not trigger the CEL.

the tornado is useless. u cant have more power with less gas. u dont need any tools for the seafoam, and for the air filter cleaning. the only tools u need for an oil change is a 17mm wrench for teh drain plug, some car ramps for the front tires an a empty carton (ie: milk carton, some sort or plastic bottle.

... not true....

intake, headers, exhaust, pulley all improve gas milage.

bmw has been marketing that the new 335 is turboed and it helps with fuel economy...

intake- suck in more air and in that case u need more fuel, headers and exhaust help empty out the exhaust gases in which the combustion chamber fills up with more air and fuel. the pulley well it just revs faster and its less stress on teh engine.

depends how you drive ur car if u're revving your car pushing it just because you just installed a new mod. simply ur engine doesn't work as hard w/ the mods... again like u said "less stress on the engine"

^^ lol...wow, i average 300-350 on a tank. Highest i got was 394.7 highway and city. I haven't changed out the spark plugs since i got the car in 2006 and i'm the 3rd owner. I have 102,000 miles on my car too. Only thing that i did that might of helped was the K&N filter.

technically you wouldn't be drawing in more fuel unless you had some sort of Engine management system and In some cases bolt on's have been proven to rob horsepower because vehicles are factory tuned to there specs.

Freeing up the airflow wont cause terrible gas mileage. Loss of low end torque due to headers in theory may "rob horsepower" but only at low rpm and is not due to restriction, therefore neglible diff. in mileage (not noticeable). When I put my headers on, my mileage, according to my very anal, trending was better. Pullies is simple; less parasitic drag, more of the power to the wheel, better mileage.
Doubtful that properly functioning/installed mods will decrease mileage. Only the choice to demonstrate their product will.
Your mods are fine as long as they are properly functioning/installed.
Preventive maint and tune up would be my first poke. then other stuff. start with easiest and least expensive possible contributors.

Mileage

First PLUGS!!!
Second clean/new air filter verify compression
third tires (proper size too)
fourth alignment
fifth clean fuel system
sixth check wheel bearings
seventh...alter your driving habits...do a search on hypermiling
eighth remove any unnecessary junk from your car
ninth check the underside of the car for objects hanging in the way
tenth wash and wax your car

Quick Reply: what are the casues for terrible gas milage?
