Owner of the station should make on average 8 - 10 cpg.
Oil company makes 7- 10 cpg.
Federal Taxes 18.4 cpg
State taxes 8 - 25 cpg depending on the state
0.5 - 1.0 cpg enviromental fee depending on the state.
1.0 - 2.0 cpg to deliver the product
2.0 - 5.0 cpg to send the product up the pipeline
remainder is cost of the crude plus refining.

yup...what dj5 said.

Depending on how I am marketing my station, my margins may vary. In a competitive area where I do a lot of volume, I may work on as low as a 5 cent margin. In a different site where my volume is low, it may be 15 cents or higher.

If you use a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover Card, it cost me 3 percent. At today's gas prices near 2 bucks, that can be almost 6 cents per gallon. So at my super competitive station where I am busting balls do more volume, the guy that uses his credit card leaves me virtually no profit.

When gas prices hit their peak recently here in Southern California, my high volume station went as high as $2 for Regular Unleaded. Here is the breakdown at that $2 level for Los Angeles County. (Different counties in different states have different taxes)

The following are rounded to the nearest penny for purpose of simplification...

15 cents sales tax (At 2 bucks, you are paying 1.85 plus sales tax)

38 cents other taxes (as shown below)

5 cents profit margin

$1.42 was my peak invoice price for 87 Octane Gas

Breakdown of current taxes (Los Angeles County)

8% Sales tax
.184 Federal Tax
.18 State Tax
.012 LUST Tax (Leaking Underground Storage Tank Tax)
.00095 Federal Spill Fund
.00077 Lead Recovery Fee

That's enough nonsense for now...

Yeah, that charge is sick...

When gas was a buck a gallon it only cost me 3 cents to take the credit card, but at these prices, I paid over 10 grand in credit fees last month at my station...

You can get lower rates, but in order to accept credit cards at the pump, it has to go through the Union 76 network, so once again, I am a slave to the oil company.

They have promised us to try to negotiate a lower rate now that our average transaction has gone from $18 to about $25.

Water and gasoline do not mix so no one actually adds any water to their gasoline. One tip is to avoid buying gasoline when the tanker is unloading at the station as they stir up any trash or water that may be in the bottom of the stations tanks.
