Weird Transmission Problem
Weird Transmission Problem
I just bought a 1999 TL for cheap with the understanding that there might be transmission issues. The car has 128,000 miles on it and the transmission has never been replaced. It shifts fine through all 4 forward gears with no noise whatsoever. When the car is cold, it operates in revers with no problem. However, it seems when the car is warmed up it has a problem in reverse. When I put it in reverse, it rolls backward fine for six or seven feet, then it is as if I put my foot on the brake, or as if the parking brake is on. There is no indication that it is slipping (like the RPMs going up). The more gas I give it, it seems that I am putting more pressure on the brake pedel, thought I am not touching the brake pedel at all.
Was wondering if there might be a brake problem, or a problem with the axels? Worse yet, could this be a transmission issue? Any suggestions in troubleshooting this?
Also, has anyone had any experience with low mileage used transmission imported from Japan?

My car's done that before too, every once in a while. Its not THE tranny problem though. Search the boards, sorry I cant be more help, but I guarantee you you're not suffering from the classic second gen tranny failure. You bought a 99, you lucky fool, you guys have different transmissions
Did one additional test. I jacked up the front of the car and raised the wheels off the ground. I then put in reverse to see if I could duplicate the problem. Sure enought, it acted as if the brakes were on. I then put it neutral, and low and behold the wheels started turning as if it were in drive. Does this help in figuring out the problem?
i have a 99 TL and have the same problems.. reverse feels weak. also when i shift from park to reverse or all the way down to drive the whole car jerks.. violently! i was told an engine mount was needed soon a while ago. you think it;s the engine mount or transmission?? transmission is slow to respond when i hit the gas and it shifts really hard, even when in manual shift mode.
a taxi backed into me (driver side rear) a while ago and all the sudden the alignment is way off to the right. alignment shop said it was the upper control arm (camber) and said that i needed adjustable ones (Ingalls or SPC Rear Adjustable Upper Coontrol Arm) to offset it b/c it was off 2 degrees and couldnt be adjusted. think this will solve the alignment problem? could it have something to do with a wheel bearing? (the same shop that i went to for big checkup said that engine mount would be gone soon and wheel bearing was cracked.. want to know which one would have a bigger effect on alignment problem)

I feel like old gen TL's have so many problems with their transmissions. Half of the posts I see on AZ relate to transmissions. Are only us fellow Acura/TL owners facing these problems? I know the 2nd gen TL is notorious for this but enough is enough. What would our forefathers say haha.
